2002/2003 - Newsletter 2 (26 August 2002)

WHEN IT’S TIME TO PARTY WE WILL PARTY HARD

Hey people, sorry this newsletter is a little later than expected, but your exhausted, battered and bruised co-ordinator has just spent the day recovering from a weekend scouting trip to Reading Festival. Expect to see Boston Rock bidding big fairly soon for impressive Seattle defensive unit Death Cab For Cutie, and effervescent and energetic frontman Andrew WK!

Anyway, back to sanity (for those of you who don’t know what the above paragraph was on about, which is most of you) and the weekend games. Current Champion Ady’s rash boast at Reading that Aardvark Abacus would likely “go through the whole season unbeaten” immediately put a big target on his team’s back, and Fred hit the bullseye, and the POTW hundred grand, with a thrilling 4-3 win over the absent manager’s charges. A double helping of Maccarone for Fred was a lot tastier than anything Ady was eating at Reading, I’d wager!

So 3 teams still have 100% record after 2 games, and Aardvark ain’t one of them. In fact, Paul Saleh’s Nil Satis top the table on goal difference, after a 3-1 win over Viola’s Pier, who consequently are one of 3 teams yet to get off the mark. Welcome early reward for Paul, who was spent most of last term hovering near the bottom. He currently heads off Kylie Bumcheeks, impressive 4-2 winners over fancied Trusted By Millions with £11.5 million man El Hadji Djouf getting off the mark with another tasty double for the Bumcheeks, and Elland Road Big Boys, Dean’s “instalments” team reporting method keeping his eye on the ball with a 2-1 win over the mighty Claymore.

At the bottom, Prettier Than You have yet to get off the mark, and a 3-0 loss in the Gooch Street derby means your esteemed co-ordinator is on washing-up duties for the next week. Also on nul points is the aforementioned Viola’s, and York’s Returning Glory, with Julian’s welcome increased level of involvement in the WSFFL yet to pay dividends for his team. Keep at it, Jools, it’ll come.

THE FF£100,000 QUESTION

Another one from Dean, as I’m too lazy to think of any right now.

Q: The NSL (National Soccer League) of Australia started up in 1977. Who scored the first ever goal?
CLUE: He later played in the old 1st Division.

Answers on a boomerang to to Dean by close of play on Saturday 31 August 2002. Dean, as before, let me know who guessed, who won etc.

The current Premiership player who refused an AFL (Aussie Rule) playing contract in the 1980's was Niall Quinn. There’s a longer explanation behind this, which I’ll publish when I find out.

No-one got it, so there’s a rollover. Clive and I both guessed incorrectly – I went for nutty Nigel Winterburn and Clive for Paul Okon, but apparently when both fed a slight clue by Dean (i.e. his country plays something similarly violent to Aussie rules and he’s built like a brick shithouse) we both got Quinny second time around. Too late though!

SHORTS

Apologies to York’s Returning Glory’s Tomas Radzinski for omitting to credit him with a goal in their game against Elland Road last week – not that it mattered, York’s still lost!…The recats have already started in earnest – Prettier Than You’s Gary Naysmith and Nil Satis’ Tony Hibbert have both moved from midfield to defence…
