2002/2003 - Newsletter 24 (12 May 2003)

WHATEVER MAKES YOU TIRED, THE RESTING ALWAYS FAILS

It’s that time of year again. So, can you all please let me know by return of e-mail whether you want to continue as a WSFFL Manager next season? As before, if any of you want to take a rest from WSFFL, I want to be as fair as possible to any prospective new managers by giving them the Summer to learn the rules and bone up on this great game of ours. So let me know your intentions by return of e-mail, all of you!

Could you also all please let me know whether you wish to retain the relegated players in your squad (i.e. players from Sunderland, West Bromwich Albion and West Ham United), plus any retained players which you already have, into next season?

I’ll keep a list of the players who are relegated and “not required” and if any of them are signed by Premiership clubs before the transfer deadline at the end of August 2003, the manager who previously owned them will get first refusal on buying them back for the compensation received.

As per last season, I’m not chasing managers up about this, so if I don’t hear otherwise from you by the end of May, I will assume you DO NOT want to keep your relegated and retained players, and will instead compensate you the cash.

GARDENING AT NIGHT

Well, Fred West Landscape Gardening XI is one team who are sorry the season is coming to a close, judging by their recent form. Having knocked seven past Prettier Than You last week, this week they went 3 better and knocked ten past champions Kylie Bumcheeks!!!! A Freddy Ljungberg hat-trick was the centrepiece of this, the biggest scoreline of the season. And perhaps fitting that Man City fan Rich Smith should get whacked 10-1 on the day when his team bade farewell to Maine Road, echoing the score of one of the more famous recent matches at the Theatre of Base Comedy (as Stuart Hall called it), namely City’s 10-1 win over Huddersfield. Anyway, there’s only one candidate for POTW this week – well done again, Fred.

Surprising though the above result may be, it made no difference to Kylie’s league winning margin, as Aardvark Abacus and Boston Rock both lost this weekend – Aardvark to Trusted, who finished 4th as a result, and Boston to Real Muppets, who finished 5th! Disappointing ends to excellent league campaigns from both the Abacus and the “Sky Heroes”.

Claymore finished a satisfactory season in 6th with a win over Nil Satis in the Toffee Derby, and Mega Bucks should be pleased with their last-day win over York’s as it took them above Prettier Than You, last-day losers against the inconsistent Groove Machine, who ended the season in 11th place.

Elland Road also finished an infuriatingly inconsistent season by winning 3-2 against meagre opposition in Viola’s Pier, whilst Fred, 10th, must be setting his sights higher for next season after his run-in. My tip for a title challenge next season – watch His Nibs!

Down amongst the dead men, Short Straw lost to San Dimas but stayed 2 places above them in 12th. Peej must be massively disappointed with his team’s form this season, after finishing 3rd last season. Yorks’ end of season run dropped them from a good mid-table position to 15th, whilst Viola’s Pier, bottom by some way from early doors, really need a full overhaul to prevent a repeat next season.

IF YOU’RE THINKING OF CHANGING

As per usual, if any of you have any suggestions for rule changes to be adopted for next season, I’m happy to receive them and discuss them with my Executive Committee colleagues for eligibility prior to putting them to a vote at the AGM. I know some of you have been pissed off with the way recats disadvantaged certain teams this season (not to take anything away from the excellent work that recat man Peej has done), and I’m aware that Mr. Timms is putting together a proposal to revamp the recat process.

But any other suggestions are always welcome. Remember, though, that they must meet the following criteria;

  • Will it enhance the game and make it more realistic and/or fun, and
  • Will it have no impact upon your hard-worked co-ordinator (that’s me), or, preferably, save him time?

If the answer to both is yes, then go for it!

THE FF£100,000 QUESTION

None this week, as it’s the last newsletter of the season, but here’s the answer to last week’s question;

Newcastle United’s Sir Bobby Robson and Jermaine “Jeeeeeee-nas” Jenas share the same birthday albeit 50 years apart. 20 year old Jenas was born on 18 February 1983, and the venerable 70 year old Sir Bob preceded him by 50 years on the same date.

The rollover £200,000 went to Newcastle fan Prettier Than You, so well done to Rachel. Correct answers were also received from Peej, Dean, Clive, Ryan and Ady. Dave also got it right but e-mailed me too late!

SHORTS

·      I know it’s only 2 games and there are probably a few managers who have a legitimate claim to May 2003 Manager of the Month, but to my mind there’s only one candidate – Fred West Landscape Gardening XI, who notched 17 goals in their last 2 games, winning 2 consecutive POTWs in the process. Not bad Fred, take another £250,000 for your efforts.
