2005/2006 - Newsletter 2 (21 August 2005)

I’M A NEW DAY RISING

Last season’s top four clashed in two high-pressure fixtures this weekend, and Boston Rock emerged as the only victors, to climb to the top of the still-embryonic table. “The Sky Heroes”, knocked down to 3rd on the traumatic (for Boston Rock fans, at least) last day of last season, exacted some measure of revenge on Aardvark Abacus, one of the teams to climb above them on that fateful weekend, by beating them 4-1. Once again the new frontline partnership of Darren Bent and Jermain Defoe were both on target. Coming along nicely, the boys…

Elsewhere, in a repeat of last year’s FA Cup Final, Champions Claymore Athletic FC and their Cup Final conquerors San Dimas High School battled out a tough 0-0 draw to preserve both teams’ unbeaten starts to the season. They sit ominously in 5th and 6th, 2 points off the pace.

So, Boston Rock are top, as one of only 2 teams with 100% records after only 2 games. The other is Trusted By Millions; they beat Real Muppets 2-1 with substitute Mido grabbing the winner, to keep their 100% start going and go 2nd. Down to 3rd go the Dead Parrots, who could only manage a 0-0 draw with Mega Buck Bandits to follow up their 5-goal opening day performance. Up to 4th go the impressively fast-starting Eleven Imaginary Boys, following a 3-0 beating of the 22 Legged Groove Machine, who sink to the bottom as the only team yet to score a goal, never mind a point, this season.

Also lagging behind early doors, with nul points, are York’s Returning Glory, who lost to Thommo’s Titans thanks to a Brian McBride goal. Real Muppets, losers against Trusted this weekend, are also yet to get off the mark. Above them on only 1 point sit Final Fantasy XI, who lost 4-1 to a rampant Nil Satis team (I must say I needed to get the Pledge on that phrase before I used it, so dusty had it become), and Aardvark Abacus. Traditional slow starters, I’m pretty sure the Abacus won’t be 12th for too much longer…

Following their opening day loss to Trusted, the expensively-assembled Fred West squad owed their manager a performance, and they duly delivered, thrashing opening-day winners Prettier Than You 6-0. Both big-money forwards Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Didier Drogba, along with new signing Asier Del Horno, were on target in this rout, which earned Fred the POTW half a mill. Well done Fred!

THE FF£100,000 QUESTION

Before his England debut, which non-UK country was Crystal Palace, England and Final Fantasy XI (yup, Ceri retained him) forward Andrew Johnson eligible to play for?

Answers to me by close of play Saturday 27 August 2005. As usual, first correct one out of the metaphorical hat gets the dosh.

There are 4 other rock-derived or rock-influenced names in the WSFFL (Jared’s Eleven Imaginary Boys makes 5) and they are;
The Big Mans 22 Legged Groove Machine (from the Wonderstuff’s first album, “The Eight Legged Groove Machine”)
Rachels Prettier Than You (the title of the solo album by Brian Stevens, who was a former member of the excellent Cavedogs and thus actually is a Boston rocker)
Beef’s Trusted By Millions (the title of an album by a Canadian band called 54-40)
Sheriff’s You Know Your Boston Rock FC (a quote from Evan Dando, lead singer of the Lemonheads, to me during a backstage chat at a Lemonheads gig)

I got two correct answers, from Beef and Rachel (both rocking managers themselves). Rach lost the coin toss, so the £100,000 goes to Trusted.

Rich and Clive both got 4 out of 5, guessing EIB, Boston Rock, PTY and the Groovers, but both went for San Dimas High School instead of Trusted as the other, Peej’s team name of course being inspired by the film “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure”. Dave and Ceri also got 4 out of 5, choosing SDHS instead of Prettier Than You. Whaddaya mean, you’ve never heard of Brian Stevens or 54-40?

SHORTS

·      A bit of confusing managerial double-speak for you here. After signing Nathan Ellington from Wigan Athletic, West Brom manager Bryan Robson talked up his new signing as follows; “He is very quick [and] is very strong and with that mixture he is that little bit different compared to my other strikers. He is the same as Rob Earnshaw and it means that we have two proven goalscorers of a different type.” Hang about, does that mean he is the same as Earnie, or different? And if Ellington is different from the other WBA strikers, being quick and strong, does that mean they’re all slow and weak??!!
·      It’s Manager of the Month time – what, already, I hear you cry? Well, strange though it seems, we’re done with Fantasy League for August now! So the August 2005 Manager of the Month award is shared between the two managers who have maintained their 100% winning starts to the season, namely Andy Perfitt of Trusted By Millions, and, erm, myself, David Rose of You Know Your Boston Rock FC. £250,000 goes to swell the coffers of these fine upstanding gentlemen. And Beef.
·      Yup, it’s a bit of a weird start to the WSFFL season this year. There’s no fixtures next weekend as there isn’t a full Premiership fixture, due to Liverpool’s involvement in the UEFA Super Cup Final causing their game against Arsenal to be called off. Thereafter it’s International Week, so we’re not back on the WSFFL trail until the first round of the Paul Cartmell Memorial Trophy on Saturday 10th, and back to League action the following weekend, a full month after this weekend’s fixtures! So I’m top for another 3 weeks – at least…
