2003/2004 - Newsletter 20 (29 February 2004)

SHE’S LUMP, SHE’S LUMP, SHE’S LUMP, SHE’S IN MY HEAD

The Fantasy League takes a couple of weeks off, as there’s no Premiership fixtures next weekend due to the FA Cup Quarter Finals. So this is also a good time for me to go into hospital and get my hernia repaired! I’m going in on the 3rd March, having the op on the 4th, and I’m scheduled to be in hospital for a week, so I should be back in full working order before the next set of fixtures. So, normal service should be resumed in time for the next newsletter!

FOR ALL THE PAIN, YOU’RE STILL THE SAME

Nothing really exciting to report in this week’s table following this weekend’s fixtures; after a lot of shuffling around last week there wasn’t much movement really. Claymore Athletic and Aardvark Abacus both scored comfortable wins; Claymore had a rare Thomas Gravesen goal to celebrate in his 3-1 win over Real Muppets, whilst Ady finally beat his sister-in-law this season, Aardvark posting a 2-0 win over Final Fantasy XI with Gudjonssen and Baros goals.

The Groove Machine remain in 3rd but drop a couple of points off the pace, after being held 3-3 by Elland Road. The major movement this week was thanks to Trusted By Millions’ 2-0 defeat of San Dimas High School, which earned Beef the POTW £100,000. Following this result, the High School dropped from 4th to 6th, losing places to both Trusted and to Boston Rock, who eased past basement boys Nil Satis, Robert Pires scoring on his return to his old club.

This result kept Nil Satis at the bottom, although Prettier Than You’s 4-1 defeat by Thommo’s Titans means Paul and Rachel are now tied on points and goal difference, Rachel keeping off the bottom by virtue of goals scored.

Elsewhere, Mega Buck beat a seriously out of sorts Kylie Bumcheeks to climb to 11th and keep another clean sheet in the process. Mega Bucks have the meanest defence in the league this season, with only 28 goals conceded. What they need now is to score some!

THE FF£100,000 QUESTION

Wimbledon midfielder Robbie Earle’s career ended after a freak injury in April 2000, after he tore his what?

Guesses by close of play on Saturday 7 March 2004. First correct one out of the hat after that date gets the dosh!

The merged Oxford and Reading FC was going to be known as Thames Valley Royals, and were going to play in a Superstadium in (of all places) Didcot. This was merely one of the Czech chump’s wacky schemes – another was to merge Fulham and QPR, and groundshare with Chelsea under a new name of Fulham Park Rangers. Luckily his schemes ultimately had as much buoyancy as he himself did!

I received correct guesses from Peej, Dean, Dave and Beef. The four-sided dice (yes, we have one) was lucky for Peej, so San Dimas get the £100,000.

A wrong ‘un from Ryan, who went for Thames Valley Harriers. Aren’t they an athletics team?

  • Some salient points from recat guru Peej on the recat debate at the Social Evening; “As for the re-cats, whichever site we use is bound to upset some managers. If there's an easy way to find a more accurate one than we should probably have a look for it. The trouble with forthegame is it's run by a financial institution, what do they know about football!”. This of course is coming from the Nationwide Footy Webmeister. Irony, nice.
  • Following a 100% record in this shortest of months, Andy Perfitt of Trusted by Millions follows up this week’s POTW award with the February Manager of the Month award. Beef, you win £250,000 for your efforts this month, which should swell your coffers after splashing out so much on Brian Wilson tickets this week!
