“WE SHOULD BE ALL RIGHT HERE, STAN, THEY HAVEN’T GOT THE PROPER KIT”
WSFFL Co-ordinator Central was saddened this week to hear of the death of one of football’s true greats, and a personal icon, Ferenc Puskas, at the age of 79.
Often overlooked when discussing the true Gods of the game, to my mind Puskas was up there with Pele, Maradona, Best, Yashin and Cruyff at the real Top Table of football. He will be remembered mostly for his role in the 1950’s Hungary team, the “Magic Magyars”, the greatest International team never to win the World Cup and the first foreign team to beat England on home turf. The header quote, incidentally, was from Billy Wright to Stanley Matthews, just before the Magyars destroyed an arrogant England 6-3. However his influence on the all-conquering 1950’s Real Madrid, culminating in his 4 goals in possibly the greatest European Cup final of all time, Real’s 7-3 demolition of Eintracht Frankfurt in 1960, should not be overlooked.
A schemer, an orchestrator, one of the most prolific International goalscorers of all time (83 goals in 84 games for Hungary, often from a withdrawn role, speaks for itself), a true genius and innovator. Rest in peace, Ferenc Puskas.
OFFENSE, DEFENSE, DEPENDING ON CRITICAL SENSES
Aardvark Abacus get to defend their Paul Cartmell Memorial Trophy this year after Ady’s team overcame sister-in-law Ceri’s Final Fantasy XI 1-0 in a tight semi final. Kevin Doyle scored the crucial goal that returned Ady to yet another final. His opponents, however, have yet to be decided, as You Know Your Boston Rock FC and Trusted By Millions drew 1-1 in the other semi. They replay next week, doubled up with their league fixtures.
So Ady will either face Trusted in a repeat of last year’s PCMT final, or will do battle against the team he’s currently scrapping it out with at the top of the WSFFL table. Talking of which…
THE SILENCE THAT’S BETWEEN US WILL SOON DISAPPEAR
With a third of the season over, the 2 current heavyweights and trophy holders in the WSFFL, You Know Your Boston Rock FC and Aardvark Abacus, are again battling it out at the top, as the gap and teams between them disappear.
Boston Rock stay top, following a 3-1 win over York’s Returning Glory. A thunderbolt from Yorks’ Tugay was not enough to salvage a result, as unfamiliar goalscorers Seol, Ridgewell and a first for Andrew Taylor, secured the points for the “Sky Heroes”. Aardvark Abacus go second, a mere two points adrift, after sweeping aside Thommo’s Titans 4-2. A Bernardo Corradi double, his first goals since joining the Titans, again couldn’t stop the Abacus from rolling on, Doyle again amongst the goals for Ady.
Third, level on points with the Abacus, go Prettier Than You; a Robert Huth goal was enough to settle a tight game against Fred West LGXI. They go one point above the 22 Legged Groove Machine who drew again, this time 1-1 with bottom club Eleven Imaginary Boys, the Groovers’ Kanu equalising an earlier Joey Barton goal.
A couple of teams stopping a recent slide were Final Fantasy XI and Claymore Athletic FC. FFXI beat Nil Satis 2-1 thanks to Boyce and Bouma goals to go up to 5th, whilst Claymore knocked recent in-form San Dimas down to 6th, after their crack strike-force of Rooney and Henry came up trumps in a 3-0 win over the High School. This shoo-perb result lifted Clive 3 places to 9th and also gave him the POTW half a million. Well done Clive-lad!
Elsewhere, Mega Bucks lifted themselves up to the top half of the table after a 3-0 win over the Dead Parrots. Demerit with a towering header and Geremi with a scorching free-kick were amongst the goals for Dave. And Trusted continue to frustrate in the league – their 0-0 draw with Real Muppets is their 4th stalemate in 10 games, and keeps Beef’s expensively-assembled team in 10th place.

THE FF£100,000 QUESTION
Which Premiership club recently bought the pub opposite their ground, to “improve facilities for [their] fans”?
The pub’s called the Red Lion, if that helps. And no, I’m not telling you the road it’s on, as that would give it away…
Answers to me by close of play Saturday 25 November 2006. As usual, first correct one out of the metaphorical hat gets the dosh.
Arsenal and Germany goalie Jens Lehmann “played through massive pain” at the World Cup because his boots didn’t fit properly! The DFB ordered their players to wear only those manufactured by principal sponsor Adidas, so Lehmann couldn’t wear his usual pair. Sounds a bit of an excuse to me…
Correct guesses from Ryan and Rich (who seem to both be on the ball, or on the web, this season). Real Muppets won the coin toss this time, so the hundred grand goes to Ryan. Well done!
A couple of wrong guesses, from Peej (“Was it the psychological pain of realising that despite being the goalkeeper of the host nation in the World Cup he was such a small part of an ever-expanding universe?” No, but a brilliant guess) and Ceri (“something insignificant wrong with his toe”; are you suggesting he makes a big fuss over nothing?).
