2003/2004 - Newsletter 26 (18 April 2004)

IT WON’T GIVE IN, IT WILL REPEAT, IT WILL REPEAT, IT WILL

Another couple of weeks off for most WSFFL teams! Next weekend, W/E 24 April, is the WSFFL FA Cup Final between Aardvark Abacus and Trusted By Millions. Both teams are flying high in the league in 2nd and 3rd places, so this, a repeat of last year’s final, should nevertheless be an epic encounter.

The weekend after that, W/E 1 May, is scheduled for the FA Cup Final Replay (if needed), plus any postponements from earlier on in the season. And there’s none of them, so it might end up being a weekend off for your overworked co-ordinator! The Newsletter is taking a breather as well – the next one will be published after the next league fixtures, which are WSFFL Week 29 on W/E 8 May. Although I will, of course, e-mail out the Cup Final result to everyone.

WAIT A MINUTE HONEY, I’M GONNA ADD IT UP

Only the vagaries of mathematics can stop Clive Fenwick’s Claymore Athletic FC from clinching their first ever WSFFL League Title, following this weekend’s fixtures. Clive’s 5-0 win over Thommo’s Titans, fuelled by a shoo-perb 4 goal salvo from Thierry Henry, when combined with Aardvark Abacus’ 1-1 draw with Kylie Bumcheeks and Trusted by Millions’ 0-0 draw with Fred West, means that Claymore are now 6 points clear at the top with 2 games left. Only Aardvark can catch Claymore now; to win the title, Ady must win both of his remaining games and hope Clive loses both of his, otherwise it’s Claymore’s championship!

Aardvark and Trusted stay 2nd and 3rd respectively, and the Groove Machine stays 4th after a 1-1 draw with Boston Rock. San Dimas’ 4-1 trouncing of York’s Returning Glory puts them above the “Sky Heroes” into 5th, and behind the Big Man on goal difference only.

A significant change at the bottom; Prettier Than You beat Real Muppets 1-0 with a Bruno N’Gotty goal to move off bottom spot by one point. That position is now occupied by Nil Satis Nisi Optimum, who were defeated 2-0 by Elland Road Big Boys. Although nothing’s decided at the bottom yet…

As for POTW, I’ve given that to shot-shy Mega Buck Bandits, who nevertheless overcame ‘er indoors’ Final Fantasy XI team 2-1, with goals from Nicky Hunt and Henrik Pedersen. That little bit of wife-beating earned Mr. Bevan the POTW £100,000, so well done Dave!

TRANSFER NEWS

Sheriff’s still tinkering with his defence…

Player                         From                                       To                               Fee

Anthony Barness (D)    YKY Boston Rock FC        Pool                             £250k
Stephen Kelly (D)       Pool                             YKY Boston Rock FC            £500k

Don’t forget that the players highlighted are now subject to the pool “cooling off” period. Any managers interested in buying them can bid until close of play Saturday 24 April 2004, after which time they go into the pool proper and are readily available. All bids to me please.

THE FF£100,000 QUESTION

Who was nicknamed “The Swan of Utrecht” by his club fans?

Guesses by close of play on Saturday 24 April 2004. First correct one out of the hat after that date gets the dosh.

Beckham wears 23 at Real Madrid not as a reference to the number of PA’s he’s slept with. It’s actually a homage to his sporting hero, Basketball legend Michael Jordan. Apparently, with his beloved number 7 already spoken for by Raul, Victoria came up with the idea of using Jordan’s number as “it didn't do too badly for him”.

I got correct guesses from Clive and Peej (although Peej also offered me some right proper flim-flam about 23 being the lowest available prime number! Weirdo!). Peej won the toss, so £100,000 goes to the High School!
