WE ARE NEW ENGLAND TILL THE DAY THAT WE DIE
Well, the Premiership has had its’ early-season break, and now your esteemed co-ordinator is going to do the same! Rachel and I are off in Boston for the next 2 Saturdays, so the next newsletter will be after the PCMT 1st Round Games on 4 October. So for the next 2 weeks, can you all please, where possible, e-mail your teams and team changes to me, to minimise wear and tear on the old answering machine? Where you do need to phone teams, or last-minute changes, through (Ady, this is primarily addressed at you), please specify which date you’re phoning them through for, as our machine doesn’t give the actual date on the message. Cheers people.
Talking of the PCMT First Round, the draw for those games follows the normal route of pitting the top 8 in the table at random against the bottom 8, and is as follows;
Aardvark Abacus                                      v       Mega Buck Bandits
Final Fantasy XI                                       v       Elland Road Big Boys
Kylie Bumcheeks                                     v       Real Muppets
San Dimas High School                           v       Nil Satis Nisi Optimum
Thommo’s Titans                                     v       Claymore Athletic FC
Trusted By Millions                                  v       You Know Your Boston Rock FC
22 Legged Groove Machine                     v       Prettier Than You
York’s Returning Glory                            v       Fred West Landscape Gardening XI
These games will be played on the weekend of 4 October 2003.
IF I STAY IT WILL BE DOUBLE
Double strikes were the order of the day, as Van Nistelrooy, Owen, Mutu, Shearer, Beattie and Kanoute all notched doubles in their respective teams’ victories this weekend, whilst Paul Dickov’s double still meant he finished on the losing side!
However these doubles were eclipsed by Aardvark Abacus’ Nicolas Anelka, who notched a hat-trick in his team’s 4-1 win over rock-bottom Elland Road, to propel the Abacus to the top on goal difference. They lead from Champs Kylie Bumcheeks, for whom Shearer and Beattie both struck twice in their 4-3 win at Nil Satis, and fast-starting Yorks, who beat Real Muppets 2-0 with Boa Morte and Radzinski goals to sink the Muppets to 15th.
San Dimas and Final Fantasy XI both maintain their good starts with wins to put them 4th and 5th respectively, whilst dangerous Trusted By Millions move into 6th with a 4-2 win over Thommo’s Titans, Owen and Mutu both scoring doubles. Boston Rock (hooray!) scored their first win of the season, and so did Fred, his 4-1 win over Claymore Athletic being deemed worthy of the POTW £100,000. Well done Fred.

THE FF£100,000 QUESTION
Who scored 9 goals in his teams 11-0 massacre of Margate in the FA Cup 1st Round of 1971/72?
Guesses by close of play on Saturday 20 September 2003. First correct one out of the hat after that date gets the dosh!
The ball-playing Football League Manager was Luton’s Mike Newell. He was sent from the dugout during his team’s 2-0 Bank Holiday Monday defeat by Brighton at the Withdean, for attempting to play the ball as it ran along the touchline near to his dugout. Apparently he thought it was going out and wanted to speed up the game. A likely story.
I got one correct guess, from Peej, so San Dimas are £100,000 richer. Well done chap!
Wrong ‘uns from Ceri who guessed Alex Ferguson – didn’t he kick a water bottle or something lame like that? And anyway, much as we’d like otherwise, he’s a Premiership manager – and Ryan, who seemingly stuck a pin in the Football League, and guessed “Peterborough’s manager” (surely not the mild-mannered Mr. Fry?).
