ALL GOING OUT TOGETHER
Following the last fortnight’s games, a clutch of ten (yup, that’s right, ten) teams are separated by a mere 5 points at the top of the WSFFL League. Although the league table has a familiar look, i.e. Aardvark and Kylie leading the way, neither team were able to press forward their advantage over the last 2 weeks, whilst your co-ordinator has been living it up in Boston (and finding a new appreciation for the sport once described by When Saturday Comes as “rounders for cocaine addicts”). Champions Kylie drew both their games, against San Dimas and Thommo’s Titans, whilst leaders Aardvark won their first game against fast-starting Yorks, but were then crushed 6-2 by Claymore Athletic. Claymore, in fact, are finally getting into gear now that Mr. Fenwick has abandoned his scruples and become adept at employing the Bevan dodge, which helped him to this and his other victory the previous week against the Groove Machine (causing cries of “Hippo”-something from the Big Man). So this is what you meant by “the gloves are off”, eh Clive?!
Two wins also for Fred and Nil Satis, who move into the chasing pack as a result, whilst 2 losses for Prettier Than You sink them in the other direction, one place above bottom club Elland Road, who nevertheless got their first point of the season against always-drawing Real Muppets.
As for POTWs; £100,000 goes respectively to Fred, who gave that impudent Final Fantasy female her first beating of the season, just when she thought playing big boy’s games was easy (whoops, did I just say that out loud?), and inevitably to Claymore, who played the boy Bevan at his own game and gave him a good spanking. The biter bit; that’s what I like to see!
SURPRISE HIM AND VISIT NOW
But no big surprises in the First Round of the Paul Cartmell Memorial Trophy, held this past weekend. Ady’s Aardvark Abacus opened the customary can of whoop-ass over his brother’s Mega Buck squad; high flyers Kylie, Claymore and San Dimas all eased through comfortably, and I’ve got to play Beef yet again, after Boston Rock drew 1-1 with Trusted. That game and the other draw, between Prettier Than You and the Groove Machine, will be replayed next weekend, doubling up with the league fixtures.
As for POTW, well I’m afraid I’ve given it to Fred again – his six goal salvo over Yorks Returning Glory was deemed worthy to earn Fred his third POTW award in 4 weeks. Surely a record?

The 9-goal hero was Ted McDougall of Bournemouth, later of Manchester United, and possessor of inordinately big hair and Mungo Jerry-esque sideburns.

· A couple of Manager of the Month awards to dish out; August 2003 goes to Julian Winterburn of York’s Returning Glory for their fast start to the season (yes, I know they had the same record as Kylie and Aardvark, but they were first and second last yesr, so you kind of expect that), and September 2003 goes to Neil Jarvey of Fred West Landscape Gardening XI, for the only 100% record in the month. It’s true!
· Prettier Than You boss Rachel is rather bizarrely putting the blame for her recent run of bad form on the shoulders of her new signing Claudio Reyna! Asked to explain this, Rachel said, “it’s what Jim (former Sheila Divine bass player Jim Gilbert, namedrop fans) said to me; “you can always rely on an American to break stuff!” ”
