2004/2005 - Newsletter 25 (11 April 2005)

BECAUSE THE NIGHT BELONGS TO WSFFL

I always thought that was what Patti Smith sang, anyway…. A heads-up for you; don’t forget, guys, that there’s no WSFFL fixtures this coming weekend, despite there being Premiership games and of course the Cup Semi-Finals. The next WSFFL fixture list will be on the Tuesday and Wednesday evenings of the following week, 19th and 20th April. I’ll aim to get the results of “Week 27” out ASAP after the end of the fixtures, but won’t do a newsletter specifically for those fixtures. The next newsletter will therefore be in 2 weeks time, following Week 28. OK?

THE SKY FALLS, YOU FEEL LIKE IT’S A BEAUTIFUL DAY

A good day at the office for the top 3, as Clive put it. Leaders You Know Your Boston Rock FC finally got back to winning ways, scoring a 3-0 win over Real Muppets, with Defoe, Pires and King on target for “The Sky Heroes”. Aardvark Abacus also knocked 3 past their opponents, Trusted By Millions, with Okocha getting a consolation goal for Beef in their defeat. And Claymore Athletic FC came from behind to score a late win over Final Fantasy XI, Watson and Weir getting late goals for Clive in their 3-2 win over “The Robins”. So it’s “as you were” at the top, Boston Rock leading by 6 points from Aardvark and Claymore, with 12 points remaining up for grabs.

A good day at the office for the bottom 3 as well! Prettier Than You, previously in 14th slot, leapt to 11th following a 2-1 win over the 22 Legged Groove Machine, goals from Dunne and Vassell securing a “double” for Rachel over the Big Man. Kylie Bumcheeks, 15th, turned over Fred West by 2-1, with goals from subs Nedum Onuoha (subject of a recent transfer enquiry by Trusted By Millions) and Steven Reid. And bottom club Nil Satis tonked previously in-form San Dimas 4-1, thanks to blue boys Hibbert, Arteta and Cahill (2). It was too difficult to choose between Paul’s and Rich’s performances for the POTW, so I’ve decided to award £100,000 to both Kylie and Nil Satis. Well done chaps!

Elsewhere, the Dead Parrots “went nap” over Thommos Titans, 5 different goalscorers featuring in their 5-1 victory; and Yorks Returning Glory followed up their win over the league leaders last week with a dour 1-1 draw with Mega Buck Bandits, a result which dropped Dave down a place to 12th. Amazingly, only Boston Rock, with 30 in the debit column, has conceded fewer goals than Mega Bucks’ 37 (tied with brother Ady’s Aardvark Abacus), but scoring goals remains the Bandits’ problem, their haul of 24 being the lowest total in the league!

TRANSFER NEWS

Rachel gets the jump on Clive and Paul for the latest young Toffee hotshot…

Player                         From                           To                                           Fee

James Vaughan (A)    Pool                             Prettier Than You                   £500K

Don’t forget that the players highlighted are now subject to the pool “cooling off” period, Any managers interested in buying them can bid until close of play Saturday 16 April 2005, after which time they go into the pool proper and are readily available. All bids to me please.

THE FF£100,000 QUESTION

One to test your observational skills…

Barcelona’s Ronaldinho swapped shirts with which Chelsea player, as the teams left the field at half time during the Champion’s League “Round of 16” Second-Leg game at Stamford Bridge recently?

Answers to me  by close of play Saturday 16 April 2005. First correct answer out of the metaphorical hat wins the dosh.

Bolton’s mascot Lofty the Lion had to change his socks and shorts from white ones to black ones, at half time in the recent Bolton-Norwich game. During the first half he had been banished from his usual halfway-line touchline position, as the Bolton players were complaining his white shorts matched their own, and they were mistaking him for one of their own team. Would have thought the large lion’s head gave it away, but Big Sam’s obviously signing all nationalities – and species – these days!

Incidentally, anyone know why Lofty is called Lofty, and why he is a lion? And don’t say it was because his mummy and daddy were lions…

I received only one correct answer, from Rachel. She’s into people dressing up as funny animals, you see. You should see my wardrobe…Anyway, moving swiftly on, that means Prettier Than You are richer by £100,000. Well done girl!

One wrong but inventive guess from Ceri, who guessed the entire Norwich team “because Delia threw dinner all over them at half time in frustration & because she'd been at the cooking sherry again”. Nice thought.
