2004/2005 - Newsletter 7 (3 October 2004)

BURN LIKE FIRE, BURN LIKE FIRE IN CAIRO

Just to give you guys an early heads-up – Rachel and I are off on hols in a couple of weeks, on a 12 day trip to Egypt. We’ll be away for the WSFFL league weekends 8 and 9, on Saturdays 23 and 30 October respectively. I’ll endeavour to get a newsletter out on our return, covering the results from those 2 weekends, but if you don’t get it until about 3 November, don’t be surprised!!!

BIRDS OF THE AIR, BEASTS OF THE EARTH

In an Animal vs Bird Kingdom confrontation in the Paul Cartmell Memorial Trophy this weekend, it was our feathered friends who surprisingly came out on top, as the Dead Parrots gained their first victory since Dean’s team name change, with a surprise 3-1 win over Aardvark Abacus. Goals from Butt, Edman and Tuore secured victory for the Parrots, and a deserved POTW £100,000 for Dean. Well done mate!

There was also a slight upset victory for the Groove Machine this weekend, 2-1 winners over Thommo’s Titans thanks to Stelios and “Tubby The Tuba”, as Rich refers to him, but otherwise results went with form. Claymore beat the Muppets 5-2, featuring doubles from Thierry Henry and “Noe dude” Pamarot; Final Fantasy XI owed their 2-1 victory to a late Palace surge, Andrew Johnson getting the winner against Kylie; San Dimas beat Prettier Than You 3-1; and despite Dave having his window open in preparation, the form book stayed firmly unthrown as Boston Rock beat Mega Bucks 2-0 with goals from Smith and Jenas.

Two ties to be replayed; Fred and Nil Satis battled to a 2-2 draw, and Zoltan Gera scored for Yorks in their 1-1 stalemate with Trusted. These games replay on 16 October, doubled up with the league fixtures.

The Quarter Final draw has already been made and came out of the hat in the following order;

22 Legged Groove Machine                   v    Fred West Landscape Gardening XI/ Nil Satis Nisi Optimum

Claymore Athletic FC                            v       The Dead Parrots

Final Fantasy XI                                     v       You Know Your Boston Rock FC

Trusted By Millions/                               v       San Dimas High School

York’s Returning Glory

These ties will be played on the weekend of 6 November 2004, and will be the only games that weekend (i.e. no league fixtures). That is, provided the replays are sorted out by then!!!

THE FF£100,000 QUESTION

Which manager was described by his chairman as a “Messiah” last season, then sacked 2 weeks later?

Answers to me by close of play Saturday 9 October 2004. As usual, first correct one out of the metaphorical hat gets the dosh.

Luton Town’s Enoch Showunmi’s main prior footballing claim to fame was appearing in a Nike advert as a body double for Patrick Vieira.

Correct answers from Dean and Ryan. Real Muppets won the coin toss so Ryan wins £100,000 as a result, so well done Ryan.

Incorrect guesses from Peej and Ceri, who both went for Thierry Henry!
