OVER HILLS AND HIGHWAYS THE BANANA BUGGIES GO
The race for the title is still alive – just – as Clive’s Claymore Athletic FC took a serious tumble this weekend on a self-confessed “banana skin”, namely bottom club Prettier Than You. In an astonishing reversal, which these “top versus bottom” games occasionally throw up, Rachel’s bottom feeders beat Clive’s top trumpers 5-1, with goals from Higginbotham, Dunne, Vassell, N’Gotty and sub Ronnie Johnsen. No surprise then that this performance earned Rachel the POTW £100,000 – well done girl!
This result still leaves Claymore 7 points clear at the top and hot favourites to win the title, as his previous closest challengers Aardvark Abacus and San Dimas both slipped up as well this weekend! Aardvark amazingly lost a “Bevan Derby”, the first one in living memory, 4-3 to Mega Buck Bandits, Ady’s striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink scoring a late hat-trick to no avail. San Dimas lost 2-1 to Fred West, Fred’s goals coming from the recalled Sheringham and Volz. Both Dave and Fred can consider themselves unlucky – had their performances been on any other weekend, they would have been shoe-ins for POTW!
So, Ady holds onto 2nd by goal difference only; the 22 Legged Groove Machine, 3-0 winners over Nil Satis, are now breathing down the Aardvark’s necks. San Dimas slip from 3rd to 6th after their loss, as wins for Trusted By Millions (3-2 over Yorks) and Boston Rock (2-1 over rivals Elland Road) lift these teams to 4th and 5th respectively. Any one of these teams could put in a late run to challenge the mighty Claymore, but they’re running out of games…
At the bottom, Prettier Than You close again to within 1 point of Nil Satis and 3 of York’s Returning Glory. With the girly pillowfight next weekend, there’s a lot at stake for Rachel. Real Muppets are also in danger of getting sucked into the wooden spoon dogfight; their 4-2 reverse against Thommo’s Titans leaves them only 6 points off the bottom.

THE FF£100,000 QUESTION
Which Premiership Striker has twice beaten up intruders in his own home?
Guesses by close of play on Saturday 3 April 2004. First correct one out of the hat after that date gets the dosh.
Ryan Moore’s Real Muppets provided the entire starting back four, namely Ashley Cole, Gary Neville, Gareth Southgate and Jonathan Woodgate, for England’s 2-1 win in Slovakia on 12 October 2002. True to their recent Muppet form, they let in a soft goal to then Boston Rock and current Groove Machine forward Szilard Nemeth, before Beckham and Owen rescued their blushes.
One correct guess, from Clive, so Claymore Athletic salvage something from a wretched weekend by winning the quiz £100,000. A wrong ‘un from Ceri (Boston Rock – my defence has never been my strong point! My midfield, mind you…)
SHORTS
- March 2004 Manager of the Month is a shared affair again; Pete Thompson of Thommo’s Titans and Neil Jarvey of Fred West Landscape Gardening XI both went unbeaten throughout the month, with 2 wins and a draw (against each other!) to their credit. For their efforts in March, they both trouser £250,000; well done guys!
