2002/2003 - Newsletter 18 (16 March 2003)

AT SIXES AND SEVENS WITH YOU

Now with a seven point lead and with six games to go, it’s a case of “Don’t Cry For Me, Aardvark And Boston”, as Kylie Bumcheeks romp even further clear at the top of the table, and are now odds-on favourites for the 2002/03 title. Rich Smith’s team won a tricky encounter with Elland Road by 3-2, thanks to a long-range effort from Mauricio Taricco, and the customary Shearer and Beattie goals. They stretch their lead at the top as Aardvark could only draw, 3-3 with Nil Satis, and Boston Rock lost badly, by 2-0 to Short Straw Rovers. This result earns Andrew the POTW £100,000. Well done Short Straw.

Short Straw also climb above San Dimas to 14th by virtue of this win, and San Dimas’ 2-0 loss to Real Muppets, with Mark Viduka sinking the High School. Still rock bottom are Viola’s Pier, who lost again, this time to Fred by 2-1. The struggling Groove Machine was also on the wrong end of a 2-1 result, with Mega Bucks beating them with Sheringham and Geremi goals.

THE FF£100,000 QUESTION

Which current Manchester City player was the youngest player to appear in the Premiership in season 1996/97, during his Everton days?

One guess per person to me by close of play on Saturday 22 March 2003.

North Korea’s Pak Doo Ik and South Korea’s Ahn Jung Hwan both scored winning goals which beat Italy in World Cup Finals games. Ik scored in a 1-0 group win for the North over Italy at Ayresome Park in England 1966, and Hwan’s famous golden goal turfed the Italians (my work sweepstake pick – bastard!) out of the 2002 World Cup.

Correct guesses from Peej and Ryan, and the £100,000 went to the Muppets. Well done Ryan. I also got a not entirely serious guess from Rich Smith.
