2002/2003 - Newsletter 20 (8 April 2003)

THEN THE DEVIL IS SIX

Kylie Bumcheeks have a 6 point gap at the top of the WSFFL table with 4 games left, and due to their superior goal difference only need win 2 of their last 4 games to clinch their first title. James Beattie fired the Bumcheeks to a 1-0 win over stuttering Claymore, who must be ruing the decision to leave David Unsworth and England’s wunderkind Wayne Rooney on his bench (I know I am!). Boston Rock are once again Kylie’s closest challengers, as the Sky Heroes thrashed poor York’s 6-2, with a Kewell double the highlight. Aardvark Abacus slip to 3rd, as they were held to a 0-0 draw by bottom club Viola’s Pier.

Trusted By Millions stay 4th despite being beaten 4-3 by Elland Road, Hakan Sukur scoring a late double for the Big Boys to clinch this one. And the resurgent Real Muppets go up to 5th after an impressive 5-0 demolition of Mega Bucks, Ryan having as good a second half of this season as his first half was bad.

POTW was difficult this week, with a number of performances (Short Straw’s 2-1 win over Prettier Than You, Viola’s battling draw, even my own Boston Rock’s win) being very close contenders, but in the end I felt Real Muppets’ 5-0 thrashing of Mega Bucks, which lifted the Muppets to a season-high 5th place, deserved the £100,000. Well done Ryan.

THE FF£100,000 QUESTION

“They talk about Ragga and Garage; the only thing I know about Garage is I keep my car in it”. Which former West Ham player and former England international was mystified by his clubmates’ musical tastes?

One guess per person to me by close of play on Saturday 12 April 2003.

“The first 90 minutes are the most important part” is a quote from Newcastle United’s Sir Bobby Robson. Perceptive stuff – no wonder they gave him a knighthood for services to the game. Apparently FourFourTwo magazine also do a t-shirt with this slogan. Cool.

No correct guesses, so we have a rollover! A wrong ‘un from Ryan, who plumped for Gerard Houllier.

SHORTS

·      A couple of Manager of the Month awards to catch up on: February 2003’s award was tied between Aardvark Abacus and Trusted By Millions, and March 2003 was similarly tied, with Real Muppets and Trusted By Millions (again) each getting a share. All these teams had 100% records during the respective months, and get £250,000 for their efforts (Trusted obviously getting half a mill as they won it both months). Well done to Ryan, Ady and Beef.
·      First recats for awhile – Fred West’s Giovanni Van Bronckhorst is now a defender, and San Dimas’ Ivan Campo and Mega Bucks’ Bernard Mendy are both now midfielders…
