2003/2004 - Newsletter 2 (25 August )203

SAME AS IT EVER WAS, SAME AS IT EVER WAS

Just two games into the season and the table is already taking an ominously familiar shape. Kylie top, Aardvark second… last years big two are two of only 3 teams to still have 100% records. Kylie overcame dogged resistance from Trusted to win 3-2, with Trusted’s £14 million man Adrian Mutu getting off the mark to no avail. Aardvark beat bottom team Fred 4-1 thanks to his ginger midfielder Scholes. They’re both on 6 points along with San Dimas, who beat slow-starting Mega Bucks 2-0 with goals from Samuel and Yakubu.

Last week’s leaders the Groove Machine slip to 4th, after being held 1-1 by the Muppets, and opening day winners, newcomers Thommo’s Titans, get a real intro to the WSFFL with a 3-0 defeat by Nil Satis, Paul’s Arsenal duo of Gilberto and Wiltord getting the goals.

POTW however went to Prettier Than You, who overcame an opening day defeat to bounce back and win the Gooch Street derby 3-1 over last year’s title challengers Boston Rock FC, with sub Hayles amongst the goals. Well done Rachel, you’re £100,000 richer. Buy me a drink?

THE FF£100,000 QUESTION

Which Scottish League Team went bust in April 1967, a mere 6 years after they’d finished 3rd in the old Scottish First Division?

Guesses by close of play on Saturday 30 August 2003. First correct one out of the hat after that date gets the dosh!

The 1988/89 Football League Title was up for grabs. Moore uttered those words whilst Arsenal’s Michael Thomas raced through on Bruce Grobelaar in the last minute of injury time, in the last game of that season. Thomas scored, ensuring the Gunners won 2-0 and the title went to Highbury rather than Anfield. And as I recall, we watched it round MC’s house, and went off and got pissed afterwards.

Correct guesses from Dean, Ceri, Ryan and Peej, and the money goes to Final Fantasy XI. Well done Ceri.

SHORTS

Spotted rocking out to perky Canadian new wave popsters Hot Hot Heat at Portsmouth Wedgewood Rooms last week was none other than Fulham boss Chris Coleman! Seems he may have been looking for an energetic frontman to partner Luis Saha, in which case he may have found him in HHH’s frontman Steve Bays…
