2005/2006 - Newsletter 9 (21 November 2005)

THERE’S NO TRUST BIG ENOUGH FOR THIS ROOM

Trusted By Millions had a pretty good weekend, all things considered. They consolidated their lead at the top of the table with a 4-1 win over Prettier Than You, thanks to goals from Barry, Ambrose and their strikeforce of Mido and Crespo, and also finally overcame Fred West LGXI by 4-3 to advance to the Paul Cartmell Memorial Trophy semi-finals. All sunny in the Beef garden right now!

Beef’s team lead the table by 3 points from You Know Your Boston Rock FC, for whom sub Alan Smith scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Eleven Imaginary Boys. Still 3rd, but a further 3 points off the pace, sit Fred West LGXI, who salvaged a 3-3 draw against mid-table Aardvark Abacus (not often you get the chance to say that) with another late tactical switch, Collins John getting a late equaliser for Fred. Up to 4th place go Real Muppets, this season showing the form they’ve been capable of for so long, and this weekend tonking the Groove Machine 4-0, Djibril Cisse amongst the goals. Down to 5th go the Dead Parrots, who were the victims of a Thierry Henry double as Claymore Athletic FC beat them 4-1. This result not only ominously lifts Clive back into the top half of the table, but also wins him the POTW half a million. Well done Clive lad!

At the bottom, York’s Returning Glory draw 0-0 with Final Fantasy XI but stay bottom, three points adrift of the Groove Machine and Mega Buck Bandits, who drew 1-1 against a stuttering San Dimas team already counting the seconds until the January transfer window opens…!

Following Beef’s Cup win, the Paul Cartmell Memorial Trophy Semi Final draw was made and is as follows;

Aardvark Abacus                                   v       The Dead Parrots

You Know Your Boston Rock FC         v       Trusted By Millions

Rachel made the draw, so you know who to blame!!!

So Trusted and Boston Rock, the top two in the table, clash at the semi-final stage, and inconsistent Aardvark Abacus have to contend with in-form (well, until this weekend anyway) Dead Parrots to sneak their way into the final. Ties will be played on w/e 3 December, doubled up with the league fixtures.

THE FF£100,000 QUESTION

Which team, up to and including last weekend, w/e 19 November 2005, has registered the most 1-0 victories in the history of the Premiership?

Answers to me by close of play Saturday 26 November 2005. As usual, first correct one out of the metaphorical hat gets the dosh.

The incident that gave Arsenal the impetus for their second-half fight-back in the second leg of the 1987 League Cup Semi-Final was hearing the White Hart Lane tannoy announcer tell the crowd where they could buy their Cup Final tickets. After hearing that, Niall Quinn later remarked “we didn’t need a half-time team talk”. Arsenal scored twice in the 2nd half to level the tie 2-2 on aggregate, then won a play-off replay 1-0, also at White Hart Lane. They also went on to win the trophy, beating Liverpool 2-1 at Wembley.

Correct replies from Ryan and Ceri (who credits the second-half fightback as being the reason for her deciding to support Arsenal – well, that and Charlie Nicholas). The cash goes to Final Fantasy XI on a coin toss. Well done Ceri and hard luck Ryan.
