2005/2006 - Newsletter 4 (20 September 2005)

BUILDING UP MY PROBLEMS TO THE SIZE OF A COW

Following this weekend, Beef’s Trusted By Millions are now the only team with a 100% winning record this season – their 4-2 win over lowly York’s Returning Glory put them 2 points clear, as James Milner and Hernan Crespo got on the scoresheet for Beef’s lot. Up to second go the Dead Parrots, who maintain their unbeaten start to the season by beating the other previous 100%-ers, You Know Your Boston Rock FC, 1-0 thanks to a Marlon Harewood strike. “The Sky Heroes” slip to 4th as a result of this reverse from their bogey team. Up into 3rd, however, are new boys Eleven Imaginary Boys – despite Prov’s recent recruitment drive, it was 3 old guys, namely Hyypia, Van Der Sar and Shearer, on the scoresheet in their 3-1 win over Final Fantasy XI.

Two other powerhouses slipped ominously into gear this weekend as well. Fred West overcame fancied San Dimas 2-1, with Babayaro and Robben goals (taking the load off Fred’s strikers for once), and Aardvark Abacus registered their first win of the campaign with a predictably easy 4-0 win over big brother Dave’s Mega Buck Bandits in the Bevan Derby.

Champions Claymore Athletic FC met their bogey team this weekend and were probably happy with the result – Michael Owen scored on his debut for Clive’s team, but Charles N’Zogbia rescued a point for Prettier Than You in their 1-1 draw.

Yorks’, losers to leaders Trusted this weekend, are now rock bottom with nul points, the only team yet to score a point this season. Off the mark this weekend were the 22 Legged Groove Machine, whose new strikeforce of Silva and Rasiak fired blanks in their 0-0 draw with Nil Satis. Also Real Muppets, whose 3-0 win over Thommo’s Titans, thanks to Reina, Ashley Cole and Abdoulaye Faye, gave Ryan his first points of the season and also the POTW half a mill. Well done Ryan!

Better fortunes in the Cup this weekend though for both Boston Rock and San Dimas. In the PCMT First Round replays, “the Sky Heroes” eased past Mega Buck Bandits with a 2-0 win, and San Dimas compounded Yorks’ woes with a 3-2 victory.

Following those replays, the Paul Cartmell Memorial Trophy Quarter Final draw was made and is as follows;

Aardvark Abacus                                      v       Eleven Imaginary Boys
The Dead Parrots                                      v       22 Legged Groove Machine
Fred West Landscape Gardening XI        v       Trusted By Millions
San Dimas High School                           v       You Know Your Boston Rock FC

Four very interesting ties – how will fast-starting Eleven Imaginary Boys fare in the Cup against traditional powerhouses Aardvark? Will the Groovers defy the odds and claim another big scalp, this time the 2nd placed Parrots? Will leaders Trusted be able to shut out Fred’s strikeforce of Drogba and Van Nistelrooy? Will San Dimas gain revenge for their defeat in last year’s final by knocking out holders Boston Rock?

I can’t wait! Ties will be played on the weekend of 29th October 2005, and will be the only fixtures that weekend.

THE FF£100,000 QUESTION

A guest one from Ceri this week.

3 pairs of brothers were separated in this Summer’s league transfers, name all of them.

Answers to Ceri by close of play Saturday 24 September 2005. As usual, first correct one out of the metaphorical hat gets the dosh – Ceri, please let me know on Sunday who that is (if anyone). If no-one gets it right, Ceri gets to keep the hundred grand!

Liverpool, France and Real Muppets striker Djibril Cisse is the Lord of the Manor of Frodsham. Cisse inherited the title when he bought a house in Frodsham for £2m. The previous owner Raymond Longster sold the title along with the estate. The title goes back to the times of the Domesday book.

I got correct answers, from Pete, Beef, Ryan, David, Ceri, Rachel, and Rich. Bit easy, this one then…The £100,000 goes to Real Muppets, first one out of the hat. A good weekend for the Muppets in the finance stakes!! Well done to Ryan, and commiseration’s to the rest. And no, Rich, giving me loads of info as part of your answer does NOT give you an advantage in the cash draw!!!

One wrong guess from Peej (who went for Diouf, after debating it was either Diouf or Cisse. Other one, Peej!)

SHORTS

·       Spot the dumbass dept - in my haste to get the last newsletter out, I forgot to write in the score of the Final Fantasy XI vs. Eleven Imaginary Boys fixture! I would hope that the 4 scorers listed underneath EIB and none under FFXI meant that you bright people out there picked up on it having finished 0-4 - that and the fact I mentioned the score in the weekend report as well...
·       I also made a couple of errors in the categorisation of transferred players – Damien Johnson (dumped into the pool by FFXI) is a midfielder, not a defender; and new 22LGM recruit Lee Young-Pyo is a defender, and certainly not a forward…
·      And while we’re at it, did anyone notice in the “Transfers” section of last week’s newsletter, that I referred to PSV Eindhoven as PVC Eindhoven? I have to say, that one was deliberate...!
