2003/2004 - Newsletter 16 (19 January 2004)

TWENTY FOUR HOURS IS NOT A WEEKEND

The Newsletter is taking next weekend off again! As it’s WSFFL FA Cup Quarter Final weekend, not a league fixture, I’ve decided to just e-mail out the scores rather than do a full-blown newsletter. Look out for the full QF results round-up, plus the semi-final draw, in the next Newsletter, after the League Fixtures on w/e 31 January.

KNOWING WHAT YOU WANT AND TAKING FULL ADVANTAGE

The WSFFL Fantasy Footy Social Evening/ January Transfer Window Auction (whew, that’s a gobful) will take place on Monday, 9th February. Mega Buck’s manager Dave and Final Fantasy boss Ceri have very kindly offered the use of their recently extended backroom for a venue; so that’s 6 Westmorland Road (just off Groundwell Road in town) for those of you who don’t know where they live. Kick off 7.30 p.m. for an 8 p.m. Auction start, and we’ll auction all the players newly-purchased into the Premiership during the January window, unless previously retained by managers (so that’s David James so far, who was retained by Elland Road).

I’ll put out a full list of players going “under the hammer” in good time before the Auction, so you can plan whom you want to buy. I’ll also have a complete list of everyone’s bank balance on the night, so you know what you’ve got to spend (although if you want to know what you’ve got in the coffers now, just ask). Usual Auction rules apply, and we’ll have an “open” pool as well. If you can’t make it and want to bid for someone, get in touch with myself or another attending manager to arrange a proxy bidder, otherwise I hope to see a whole lot of you there!

I DIAL IT IN FROM SOUTH OF THE BORDER

The top two, Aardvark Abacus and Claymore Athletic FC, are now making a break for the border and are 5 points ahead of the chasing pack. Aardvark’s crucial 4-2 win over the chasing Groove Machine helped open the gap, although Ady was away on a scouting mission on some ski slope or other, and didn’t witness his team’s fine win over his former groundsharers. Meanwhile, Thierry Henry bagged a brace and propelled Claymore to a 4-2 win over Yorks to keep Clive 1 point behind the Abacus in 2nd.

San Dimas, until recently right up with the leading duo, took a tumble this weekend and lost 4-1 to Thommo’s Titans. Quite rightly, this performance gave Pete the POTW £100,000, so well done to him. The Groove Machine and Final Fantasy stay in 4th and 5th respectively despite both losing, but Elland Road, who beat Ceri’s FFXI 2-0 this weekend, and a resurgent Boston Rock FC, who kept up their winning run with a 2-0 win over champions Kylie Bumcheeks, are now breathing down their necks in a congested chasing pack.

At the bottom, a late late Sean Davis goal for Trusted consigned bottom team Prettier Than You to another defeat, which with Thommo’s win, now leaves them 5 points behind Nil Satis, who lost to Mega Bucks. Rachel, your luck’s gotta turn soon!

TRANSFER NEWS

Quite a busy period to report on this time, with the Boston Rock boss harking back to the “revolving door” transfer policy days of Athletico Sheriff FC…

Don’t forget that the players highlighted are subject to the pool “cooling off” period. Any managers interested in buying them can bid until close of play on Saturday 24 January 2004, after which time they go into the pool proper and are readily available. All bids to me please.

THE FF£100,000 QUESTION

Which promising young Premiership defender was bought by Kevin Keegan for 30 tracksuits?

Guesses  by close of play on Saturday 24 January 2004. First correct one out of the hat after that date gets the dosh!

Up until Boxing Day, Aston Villa’s Juan Pablo Angel had been caught offside the most in this season’s Premiership, an impressive 39 times. And you thought that Aston Villa didn’t do that much attacking!

I got correct guesses from Clive and Ryan. Real Muppets won the cash on a coin toss, so well done Ryan, and hard luck Cliv-lad.

Wrong ‘uns from Peej (Henri Camara) and Dave (Darius Vassell). Good but not quite!

SHORTS

·      Guys, if you’re putting in a bid for a player (pool, 48 hour or whatever) by e-mail, can you please title your e-mail “Bid for player” or something similar? In my capacity as manager of Boston Rock, I was going to prepare a bid for Maccarone, but then opened an e-mail from another manager entitled “WSFFL Newsletter 15”, to see a bid for him. This immediately meant I could not bid, having had sight of a rival’s bid! Bah! Seriously though, don’t do it.
