2003/2004 - Newsletter 27 (9 May 2004)

WITH THAT SMILE OF YOURS AND A COUPLE OF COORS

I don’t normally use this space to plug anything, so please excuse my indulgence, but Rachel and I are organising a gig! That’s right, after so many years of going to watch the bloody things, we’re organising one ourselves!

So, Boston Rock Promotions proudly present THE PILLS at the Broadwalk, Swindon, on Sunday 23 July 2004. The Pills are one of our favourite bands, hailing appropriately from Boston, Mass., and will be ably supported by Swindon heroes You Are Here. Tickets £3 advance (from Rach or myself, or the Broadwalk if you’re passing), and doors at 7.00 p.m. If you only get to one gig this year – make it this one!

JUST LIKE THE CLAYMORE FLYING FREE

Congratulations to Claymore Athletic FC, the 2003/2004 WSFFL Fantasy League Champions! Clive stumbled over the finish line, being defeated 2-0 by San Dimas High School this weekend, but Boston Rock did Claymore a favour by holding Aardvark Abacus to a 2-2 draw. Indeed, as a result of this draw, Aardvark slip to 3rd and Trusted By Millions move into 2nd in the table following their 3-2 win over Real Muppets. San Dimas, by virtue of their win, not only go up to 4th, but trouser £100,000 for the POTW, so well done Peej! The Groove Machine are 5th after their bleak 0-0 draw with outgoing champions Kylie Bumcheeks, and Boston Rock stay 6th, only on goal difference now from Final Fantasy XI.

At the bottom, Nil Satis are 2 points adrift after losing 3-2 to the aforementioned Final Fantasy, and need to win their last game and hope that Prettier Than You – who held Fred West to a 0-0 draw this weekend – lose their last game. And who have Nil Satis got on the final weekend – why, none other than fellow bluenoses and newly-crowned Champions Claymore Athletic FC! Toffees top and bottom? It’s on…

PICTURE THIS

Congratulations to Trusted By Millions, the 2003/2004 WSFFL FA Cup winners! Trusted gained a measure of revenge for his defeat by the Aardvark in last year’s final, by winning the rematch 4-1. Beef of course will now bring a camera along to the WSFFL AGM to capture the moment – he’s even threatening to buy a digital one, especially for that award shot! A full report on the Cup Final is included in this newsletter. Enjoy!

THE FF£100,000 QUESTION

Which WSFFL Manager has most English players in his or her squad?

Guesses by close of play on Saturday 15 May 2004. First correct one out of the hat after that date gets the dosh. And just for the duration of this question, I’m not mailing out any squad listings!

AC Milan fans nicknamed Marco Van Basten “The Swan of Utrecht”, apparently due to his elegant approach to the game. I think we should adopt that over here, just think what we could come up with. We could rename Emile Heskey “The Camel of Leicester” and Peter Crouch “The Stick Insect of Solihull”, for starters. Any more suggestions?

One correct guess, from Clive, so the £100,000 goes to Claymore Athletic FC! An incorrect one from Peej; Jan Jongbloed? Anyone else but me and Peej remember Holland’s decidedly un-swanlike 1978 World Cup goalkeeper?

·      Another accolade for Andy Perfitt of Trusted By Millions; thanks to an unbeaten record in the league during the month and the FA Cup Final win, he’s also April 2004 Manager of the Month! Well done Beef - £250,000 is nicely nestling in your bank balance as a result!

Trusted By Millions won the 2003/2004 WSFFL FA Cup Final in style, beating their conquerors of last year, Aardvark Abacus, thereby gaining sweet revenge. The game started badly for Aardvark with the early substitution of Gary O’Neil. Trusted seized the initiative from the outset, with Phillips continuing his good recent form and justifying his Trusted recall. And it was Phillips who provided the through ball for strike partner Mikael Forssell to slot past Kasey Keller in the 34th minute.

This brought Aardvark back into the game, Brown shooting wide, but lack of defensive concentration was punished with a simple Gareth Barry header making it 2-0 on the stroke of half time. Trusted continued their ascendancy in the second half, despite the loss of the talismanic Barry through injury early on, and the impressive Sean Davis scored the goal of the game on 64, shooting in from 25 yards to make it 3-0.

Abacus hopes were briefly raised when Ben Thatcher felled Hasselbaink in the box, and Ian Harte celebrated his recall for Abacus by rifling in the resultant penalty. However Sean Davis capped his man of the match performance in the last minute, providing the cross for substitute Michael Gray to head home and seal a deserved win for Beef’s Trusted By Millions. Watch them cameras pop now…
