MONDAY MONDAY, CAN’T TRUST THAT DAY
The January 2007 Transfer Window Auction and Social Evening will take place on Monday February 5th, at our place at 7.30 p.m. for a prompt 8.00 p.m. start. It has to be Monday, as Evan is scheduled to visit with us in Swindon the previous weekend, and we wouldn’t be back and prepared enough to hold it on the Sunday evening. So there you go!
As usual, I’ll e-mail out a list of players to go “under the hammer”, as soon as the transfer window closes at the end of January. This should give you time to either plan your bids for when you attend, or to arrange proxy bids if you’re unable to make it (I’m not holding my breath on Dean flying over for two WSFFL events in the same season!). I’ll also advise you all your up to date bank balances just before the auction, so you know how much you can waste on Henrik Larsson. We’ll probably have another quiz as well, and I think we might have a couple of rule-related things to discuss. So come prepared! See you all then, or let me know if you can’t make it…
TELL ME IT AIN’T SO, I ALREADY KNOW
I know it’s old news now, but I just thought I’d recap the recat meeting from last Monday. Recat Guru Peej and Executive Committee member Rich attended, and views were solicited from the other Committee members Ady and Paul Saleh, both of whom were elsewhere. These four doughty gentlemen, along with your esteemed co-ordinator, made up the decisions committee, and we came to the following decisions;
· Seol Ki-Hyeon (Boston Rock, Reading) recat appeal from A to M was accepted (4-0 unanimous verdict - I didn’t get a vote as he’s my player)
· Jason Euell (Prettier Than You, Middlesbrough) recat appeal from A to M was accepted (3-2 majority verdict)
· Geremi (Mega Bucks, Chelsea) recat appeal from M to D was accepted (4-1 majority verdict)
· Jon Aarne Riise (Aardvark, Liverpool) recat appeal from M to D was accepted (4-0 unanimous verdict - Ady didn’t get a vote as he’s Ady’s player)
· Abdoulaye Faye (Muppets, Bolton) recat appeal from M to D was accepted (4-1 majority verdict)
· Joey O’Brien (Muppets, Bolton) recat appeal from M to D was accepted (5-0 unanimous verdict)
· Gabriel Agbonlahor (Muppets, Villa) recat appeal from A to M was rejected (5-0 unanimous verdict)
RECATS (continued)
In addition to the above recats, the following were not appealed, so came into effect the weekend just gone;
· Julio Baptista (Nil Satis, Arsenal) moves from A to M
· Gareth Barry (Trusted, Villa) moves from D to M
· Stephen Warnock (Parrots, Liverpool) moves from D to M
· Alan Smith (Boston Rock, Man Utd) moves from M to A
· Ole Solskjaer (Groovers, Man Utd) moves from M to A
· Roudolphe Douala Mbela (Final Fantasy, Portsmouth) moves from A to M
IT’S ABOUT TIME
Last weekend’s FA Cup games proved a welcome respite from the league (well, for those of us with one point from their last possible 15, that is…). In the top tie of the round, a bumper 74,924 crowd saw You Know Your Boston Rock FC knock 7 past the 22 Legged Groove Machine in a 10 goal thriller. And finally, finally, finally!!! Tomas Rosicky was on the scoresheet for “The Sky Heroes”, grabbing his first 2 goals of the season with a double in the 7-3 rout, although this was outdone by Frank Lampard’s hat-trick.
Performance of the round, however, must go to Thommo’s Titans, giving us a good old fashioned cup upset by taking out Ady’s high-flying Aardvark Abacus, with a 3-2 win thanks to goals from McBride, Tal and Wright-Phillips. A deserved FA Cup POTW half a million was his reward; well done Pete!
First-time wins also included Prettier Than You, with an good defensive performance in their 3-1 win over the Dead Parrots. Both Final Fantasy XI’s strikers Johnson and Smith were on target in their 4-1 win over Fred West LGXI. Not to be outdone by wifey, Dave’s Mega Bucks scored an unexpected 3-1 victory over in-form Nil Satis, with McCulloch, McCarthy and Chimbonda goals. And York’s Returning Glory grabbed a shock 1-0 win over Eleven Imaginary Boys, Ian Pearce the unlikely hero.
One of the tied games was settled this weekend; Real Muppets overcame Claymore Athletic FC 3-1 with Agbonlahor, Ronaldo and Agger goals, following a 1-1 draw first time around. However, San Dimas High School and Trusted By Millions still couldn’t be separated by a replay – they drew 1-1 for the second week in succession.
As previously advised, the FA Cup Quarter Final draw was made at the recent Recat meeting. Rich drew the home teams and Peej the away, and the draw came out of the fabled yellow velvet bag as follows;
Thommo’s Titans v York’s Returning Glory
San Dimas High School OR
Trusted By Millions v Real Muppets
Mega Buck Bandits v Prettier Than You
Final Fantasy XI v You Know Your Boston Rock FC
FA CUP FIRST ROUND (continued)
Another interesting draw, this, with a real chance of an “unfancied” team being in the final this year. Great stuff!
Ties will be played on Tuesday 30 and Wednesday 31 January 2007. There are 8 Premiership fixtures, and also the League Cup Semi Final second leg between Arsenal and Tottenham, scheduled to be played over those two dates. The semi-final will count towards our Cup Quarter Final fixtures, up to 90 minutes only as per the normal rule. This means that 2 Prem teams are not in action – Everton and Man City. You should all have squads to cope with the inaction of these 2 teams (Nil Satis have already been knocked out!), but if you feel you need to force a postponement, well you know what to do.
FA Cup games under floodlights; you can’t beat it!
SHE LIFTED HER ARMS AND SHE FLOATED AWAY
Prettier Than You increase their lead at the top of the table this weekend, continuing their knack this season of grinding out a vital result at the right time. This time it was a 1-0 victory over Mega Buck Bandits, with Craig Bellamy the match-winner, to keep Rachel top for the 6th successive week, and nudge her 3 points clear of the chasing pack. Aardvark Abacus still spearhead the chase, despite being held to a 2-2 draw by Claymore Athletic FC, “Overpriced” Martins getting a stunning equaliser for the Abacus.
The big mover this week, however, is Real Muppets, up to 3rd following a 4-1 win over Final Fantasy XI, Ronaldo and Agbonlahor both on target for the Muppets. Nil Satis and the Groove Machine, 3rd and 4th last weekend, both slipped up badly in the title chase, Nil Satis going down 5-1 to a resurgent Trusted By Millions, who are now up to 5th following a good recent run. However the Groove Machine had worse luck, losing 3-2 to bottom club York’s Returning Glory. A double from Groover’s midfielder Yossi Benayoun was to no avail, as Peter Crouch also grabbed a brace and Julio Arca hit one, to secure an unexpected win and this week’s POTW half a million for Julian. Well done mate!
Fred West LGXI spurned a chance to strengthen their title credentials, being held 3-3 by the struggling Dead Parrots. And Champions Boston Rock FC continue their ignominious slide down the table, losing 3-2 to San Dimas High School and slipping below their weekend opponents and into the bottom half of the table in the process.
At the bottom, York’s stay 5 points adrift despite their win, with the Dead Parrots slipping to 15th after Thommo’s Titans beat Eleven Imaginary Boys 3-2 this weekend, Carrick, Christanval and McBride on target for Pete.
But with 13 fixture weekends to go, there are still only 8 points separating 9th placed Boston Rock from leaders Prettier Than You, in the closest title chase for years. It’s still anyone’s league to win (at least, that’s what I’m telling myself….).

THE FF£100,000 QUESTION
Which player was the most substituted in the English Premiership last season?
Answers to me by close of play Saturday 20 January 2007. As usual, first correct one out of the metaphorical hat gets the dosh.
Wigan and Eleven Imaginary Boys striker David Cotterill has the middle names “George Best”. In fact his full moniker is David Rhys George Best Cotterill. That’s a good idea actually, maybe we’ll name our forthcoming offspring Bob Lev Yashin Ferenc Puskas Dragan Stojkovic Rose. Then again, maybe not…
Correct replies were received from Ryan and Clive only. Real Muppets were face up on the coin toss, so Ryan trousers the cash. Well done Ryan.
A wrong ‘un as well, from Peej, who plumped for young Irishman Kevin Doyle.
SHORTS
· I can’t do math, me; thanks to Dean and Clive for pointing out that £500,000 divided by 3 is of course £166,666 and not £133,333, so they (and Ryan) were owed an extra £33,333 for their Xmas quiz efforts. I’m going back to the abacus (not Aardvark’s) for help. I of course work with figures every day. Be afraid. Be very afraid…
