2005/2006 - Newsletter 15 (8 January 2006)

C’MON, C’MON, CAN’T YOU SEE SOMETHING’S GOING ON

The January 2006 Transfer Window Auction and Social Evening will take place on Monday February 6th, at our place and will start at 8.00 p.m. prompt. The Transfer Window Auction is now an established part of the WSFFL Calendar, so much so that I’ve been surprised that I’ve already received a few queries as to whether the new players will be available under the 48 hour rule, or be auctioned off together. The latter is true!

As before, I’ll e-mail out a list of players to go “under the hammer”, once the transfer window is closed at the end of January. This will give you all time to plan your bids, and for any managers who are unable to attend (Mr. Watts, of course, but if anyone else can’t make it, please let me know) to arrange proxy bidders. I’ll also advise you all of your up to date bank balances just before the auction, so you know how much you can go up to for that new Man United defender. We’ll have another quiz as well, to win back some of your outlay (or not, if you’re Thommo). See you all then!

MAYBE IT’S THAT NOTHING IS NEW

A fairly uninspiring WSFFL FA Cup 1st Round draw produced a fairly predictable set of results, I’m afraid. Most games went the way of the form teams, with the big boys easing through to the next round. One only hopes that the Quarter Finals, which will be drawn tomorrow during the recat appeals meeting, will produce some livelier contests. I’ll let you all know the draw when it’s done.

Anyway, back to the First Round. League leaders You Know Your Boston Rock FC left goalscorer Darren Bent on the bench, but still managed a straightforward 4-1 victory over Final Fantasy XI, Robert Pires ending his recent barren spell with a double, and Carlton Cole scoring his first of the season for “The Sky Heroes”. Trusted By Millions also eased through, with Le Tallec, Barry and Gerrard on target in their 3-1 win over Mega Bucks. Aardvark Abacus navigated a tricky tie against York’s Returning Glory, sub Xabi Alonso bagging a stunning brace in their 3-2 win. And Fred West came from behind late on to secure a 3-2 win over San Dimas, with late Brown and Silvestre goals.

Joining them in the Quarter Finals are Nil Satis, 2-1 winners over a stumbling Eleven Imaginary Boys, and the Dead Parrots, who heaped further strife on Clive’s season with a 4-3 win, Robbie Fowler scoring a hat-trick for the Parrots. The only tied game was Real Muppets and Thommo’s Titans, who replay next weekend after a 1-1 draw.

So, POTW went to Prettier Than You, who ended their recent 3 game losing streak with a stunning 4-1 win over the Groove Machine, with both Bellamy and Rommedahl getting 2 for Rachel’s team. For the emphatic nature of this win, Rachel wins the POTW half a million. Well done girl!

THE FF£100,000 QUESTION

Aston Villa’s last Premiership win over Manchester United, a 3-1 win at Villa Park on 19 August 1995, prompted which famous (and wildly inaccurate) pundit’s quote?
Quote and pundit, please, for the cash.

Answers to me by close of play Saturday 14 January 2006 As usual, first correct one out of the metaphorical hat gets the dosh.

The naughty Premiership club with the offensive 2006 Annual was West Ham United, who had to recall 2,500 Annuals and withdraw it from sale at the club shop, following complaints from parents about a page of barely-disguised offensive chants. One example was this one, to be sung to the tune of “My Old Man’s A Dustman”:

“Oh, Mr. Sergei Rebrov, we got him on a free, before he played for Tottenham he was better than Henry, his last club was a shambles, they treated him like s***e, but now he plays for West Ham, he’s f****** dynamite!”

Offensive, I’m sure you’ll all agree, particularly Julian, who used to own Rebrov – Rebrov was never f****** dynamite!!

No correct replies, so there’s a rollover next week! Wrong ‘uns from Ryan (Arsenal), Dave (Sunderland) and Ceri (Birmingham), but I think they were all wild stabs in the dark.
