2006/2007 - Newsletter 6 (2 October 2006)

I HOPE THE WRETCHED TOWN WILL FALL

Unbeaten records, form guides and reputations went tumbling this weekend in one of the most extraordinary set of weekend results for some time. Like Seafood at the Brunel Rooms on Friday night (I did tell you about it, but you all missed it), perennial underdogs snatched impressive results from the jaws of defeat across the fixture list, and top teams, like the “wretched town”, did fall.

So where to start? Well, in one of those classic top versus bottom encounters, pointless York’s Returning Glory (i.e. “no points so far” this season, not “what’s the point of them”, Julian!!!) went to unbeaten leaders Claymore Athletic FC, in a home banker, right? Wrong! Goals from Hulse and Speed secured an outstanding 2-0 win for Julian’s basement boys. This improbable victory gives York’s a well-deserved POTW half a million. Well done Julian!

Nil Satis, who started the weekend in 2nd and also defending an unbeaten record this season, fell foul of Mega Buck Bandits’ strikeforce. The notoriously shot-shy duo of Heskey and McCarthy eschewed their usual form to both notch goals in a 3-0 win, Ivan Campo getting the other for Mega Bucks. This result gave resurgent Aardvark Abacus a chance to go 2nd, but they spurned it, losing to the previously stuttering 22 Legged Groove Machine 1-0 thanks to a Kanu goal. You Know Your Boston Rock FC could also have taken 2nd spot, but a stunning late double from Ashley Young saw Prettier Than You snatch a 3-3 draw in the Whitby Grove derby. Phil Jagielka also scored a scorcher for Rachel – maybe she’s found her goalscoring midfielders now after all! Honours fittingly shared on our 1st Wedding Anniversary.

So up to 2nd place go Final Fantasy XI, who beat the Dead Parrots 2-1, despite Damien Francis scoring a late own goal. Nil Satis drop to 3rd, one place above their weekend conquerors Mega Bucks. The top 4 are all on 10 points, and up to 5th, one point behind, come Fred West, in-form Didier Drogba scoring in their 2-1 win over Real Muppets.

At the bottom, York’s remain in 16th (which is my nice way of saying “last”!), but are now level on points with struggling Trusted By Millions, who really have yet to get their season started. They could once again only draw 0-0 this weekend, this time with Eleven Imaginary Boys, and are now the only team without a win in the league. Finally, San Dimas also needed a late equaliser, from sub Sylvain Distin, to rescue a point against Thommo’s Titans, for whom Van Persie scored a scorching brace in their 2-2 draw.

THE FF£100,000 QUESTION

More World Cup 2006 teasers!!

During the World Cup, Portuguese midfielder Costinha admitted to being an avid collector of what, prompting sales increases of said articles in Portugal?

Answers to me by close of play Saturday 7 October 2006. As usual, first correct one out of the metaphorical hat gets the dosh.

Ivan Kaviedes celebrated his goal for Ecuador over Costa Rica by donning a Spiderman mask. A pretty makeshift one it was as well – Spidey’s is red, not yellow. Nevertheless the gesture was a good one; was to honour a friend of his who’d recently passed away (no doubt in pitched battle with Doctor Octopus…).

I got 5 correct replies, from Peej, Rich, Ceri, Ryan, Clive (who said “a mask”, so half right). These World Cup questions are certainly proving popular! San Dimas High School was the name out of the hat, so the hundred grand goes to Peej. Well done chap, and thanks everyone else for your guesses.

SHORTS

·      September 2006 Manager of the Month time; this time it goes to the only team to navigate the month (including the minefield that this weekend’s fixture list turned out to be) unbeaten. It’s, ahem, me actually, the champion side accumulating 2 wins and 2 draws in the month. So David Rose of You Know Your Boston Rock FC is the September 2006 Manager of the Month, and I’m awarding myself the customary £250,000 for my efforts. Well done me!
·      Talking about myself, just to give you all a heads-up that Rach and I are off this weekend for a long weekend break in Berlin, to celebrate our 1st Wedding Anniversary. It’s international weekend as well, so there aren’t any WSFFL fixtures, so this should cause minimal disruption to the usual WSFFL co-ord service. Just that if you want to buy or dump players into the pool, you might have to wait a few days before it all happens. OK? Ja gut, meine freunde!
