2005/2006 - Newsletter 25 (3 April 2006)

WHEN DO WE ADMIT IT'S NOT SAFE

To continue this Nada Surf lyric quote, I was the “nervous watcher” on Monday evening during the Blackburn-Wigan game. The result of that fixture meant You Know Your Boston Rock FC squeaked through with a 1-0 win against York’s Returning Glory, with a single Paulo Ferreira goal, to once again stretch their lead at the top of the table to 7 points. With 5 games left, it’s looking good for “The Sky Heroes” but after last season’s late late collapse, I’m certainly not counting any chickens yet!

Here’s one reason why - Aardvark Abacus remain in fearsome form, going into a crucial fixture with Trusted By Millions next weekend. Following the 4-4 classic against Boston Rock last week, they were again on their “A” game this weekend, hammering hapless Thommo’s Titans 7-2. A Gary O’Neil double and goals from strikers Keane and Adebayor were amongst Ady’s magnificent seven, with Van Persie and Diaby replying for a plucky but outclassed Thommo. Aardvark go back up to 2nd place on goal difference, after Trusted could only muster a 0-0 draw with Real Muppets. That Aardvark-Trusted game next week may end up being a title eliminator, with the loser being dealt a severe body blow to their Championship chances. Personally, I’m hoping for a draw...!

With 16 points between top and 4th spots and only 15 points up for grabs, we now know that this year’s Champions will be one from Boston Rock, Aardvark and Trusted. However, that doesn’t detract from the race for 4th place, which took another unexpected twist this weekend. Eleven Imaginary Boys leap up to 4th following a 2-1 win over the previously hot Groove Machine, Shearer and Perry scoring for Prov. Down to 5th go Fred West Landscape Gardening XI, following defeat by Prettier Than You, courtesy of goals from Ameobi and Ferdinand Junior. Rachel’s win, in fact, bags her the POTW £500,000. Well done girl!

Up to 6th from 9th last week go Claymore Athletic – in another 8 goal thriller, they edge past San Dimas High School 5-3, with practically all of Clive’s midfield on target in this one, to go above their weekend opponents on goal difference.

At the bottom, York’s and Thommo’s are 13 points adrift from the pack after losing to the top 2 this weekend, and are left to scrap over the wooden spoon. Back down to 14th place go Final Fantasy XI, losers to Nil Satis Nisi Optimum by a single James McFadden goal. And down to an unaccustomed 13th spot plummet the Dead Parrots, who were held 2-2 by Mega Buck Bandits this weekend, Jason Roberts getting a late equaliser for Dave’s team. Rachel’s win over Fred shoots her up from 14th to 12th, and Paul’s win over Ceri rockets him back up from 13th to 10th! It’s tight as a gnat’s chuff down there…

TRANSFER NEWS

Martin Laursen (D)              Mega Buck Bandits                Pool                             £4m

Don’t forget that the players highlighted are now subject to the pool “cooling off” period, Any managers interested in buying them can bid until close of play Saturday 8 April 2006, after which time they go into the pool proper and are readily available. All bids to me please.

THE FF£100,000 QUESTION

And here’s another recent observational question! Bit easier though, this one.

Which England player had 2 different numbers on his shirt, during the recent International versus Uruguay, on Wednesday 1 March?

Answers to me by close of play Saturday 8 April 2006. As usual, first correct one out of the metaphorical hat gets the dosh.

The masked player was Manchester City and San Dimas High School midfielder Trevor Sinclair, who wore the mask for a couple of games back in February to protect a broken cheekbone. Made the swashbuckling winger look a little like Zorro as well…

Correct replies from Peej, Dave, Ceri, Ryan and Clive (although Clive didn’t know it was blue, being colour-blind!). Mega Buck Bandits came up on the roll of the dice, so Dave wins the hundred grand. Well done chap, and thanks everyone else for your guesses.

SHORTS

·      WSFFL mirrors real life, it’s true. This from Julian, following his defeat by Thommo last week, which ended his 5 game unbeaten streak; “They always say fact is often stranger than fiction, but the end of the unbeaten run of the not so mighty YRG also coincided with the end of the oh so mighty York City seven game run !!
·      Whoops – I forgot to include Rachel in the right guesses on last week’s newsletter question. Rach should know – Luke Moore is her player! Profuse apologies from WSFFL Co-ord Central.
·      I also found it interesting and somewhat amusing that this Saturday, April Fool’s Day’s, “Guardian” sports supplement featured Glenn Hoddle on the cover. Few greater fools in football than he…
