WELCOME TO THE SHOW
We’re back! Welcome to another rollercoaster year of Fantasy League. No new managers to welcome this year, as all 16 of you who competed last year have decided to come back for more, which is either a great vote of confidence in this great game of ours (vote of confidence, eh? I should watch my back for the director’s elbow then!), or shows you’re all gluttons for punishment. Either way, welcome to the show!
I’D RATHER HAVE IT FATAL THAN A LIFE UNSTABLE
Thanks as usual to everyone who made it to the WSFFL AGM and Auction at the Great Western Pub on Monday 12 August. The feedback I got was that it was again a successful and fun evening, and much as I’d like to claim full credit for that, a huge amount of thanks are due to Paul Saleh for organising a fine venue and getting the grub sorted out. Cheers Paul!
The salient points from the AGM were;
- No rule changes were voted in. We’ve got a game which is stable and settled, which works for everyone, so let’s not change a winning side!
- This year’s subscription rate was unanimously voted in at £7. Most managers paid on the night, but could Ryan, Beef and Rich Smith see me with £7 as soon as practicable, chaps. I’ve put together a signature form for subs this year, to avoid any confusion later in the season.
- Peej provided us with a recategorisation update, and from the ensuing discussion it was unanimously voted in that Premiership fixtures only should count towards the recat process.
- We again had a “phone-in” attendee – this time Steve Paul joined us via global multimedia link-up from wherever he was (Didcot or somewhere similarly exotic)
- Paul Saleh collected the league runners-up plaque on behalf of Ryan, and John collected the Cartmell Cup and winners plaque on behalf of Rich Smith. Just thought I’d publish that this time, in case things go missing like Fred’s plaque did last season!
- Julian Winterburn managed to make it to an AGM for once (!), and performed his threatened squad “revamp”, in the process buying another 3 goalies to add to the 2 he’d already got! Jools, I know it’s the most important position on the team, but still…
SAME OLD SAME OLD CRAPS AND SAME OLD RANK STUPIDITY
Hmmm. It’s like Summer never happened – the first table of the season and Aardvark Abacus top it. A 4-1 opening day hiding of last year’s closest rivals Real Muppets, with all 4 goals coming from Ady’s midfielders, serves serious intent for the season. Two titles in a row for Ady? You’d be a brave man to bet against it…
A good win for Nil Satis, over cup holders San Dimas, lifts them to 2nd in the nascent table, with Trusted by Millions also quick off the mark with a 2-0 win over Boston Rock. The Performance of the Week £100,000, however, goes to Elland Road Big Boys, with a thrilling last-gasp 4-3 win over York’s Returning Glory, with 2 late late goals from Lomano Lua Lua clinching the win for Dean.

THE FF£100,000 QUESTION
One to start the season from down under – from Big Boy Dean Watts!
Which current Premiership player was to be offered an AFL (Aussie Rule) playing contract in the 1980's, but refused it to follow a career in ’Proper' football?
Answers on a Koala Bear (ok, on an e-mail then) to to Dean by close of play on Saturday 24 August 2002. Dean, let me know who guessed, who won etc. Cheers cobber!
