2001/2002 - Newsletter 9 (22 October 2001)

I’M HEAD OF THE CLASS, I’M POPULAR

The Paul Cartmell Memorial Trophy First Round replays saw San Dimas High School safely negotiate their passage into a Second Round tie with Prettier Than You. Goals from Kanoute (2), Bergkamp, Terry and a brace from new boy Franck Queudrue saw San Dimas achieve an impressive 6-1 win, Robert Pires replying for Nil Satis. The Fred West/ Mega Buck replay ended in deadlock again, 2-2 this time, with Dennis Wise and Celestine Babayaro replying for Fred following goals from Mega Bucks’ Keith Gillespie and Mustapha Hadji. They replay again this weekend, doubling up with their league fixtures. Hurry up and get a result, huh guys?

Therefore, the revised Paul Cartmell Memorial Trophy Quarter Final draw is as follows;

Elland Road Big Boys                              v       York’s Returning Glory
Aardvark Abacus                                      v       Mega Buck Bandits/ Fred West Landscape
                                                                           Gardening XI
Trusted By Millions                                  v       Kylie Bumcheeks
Prettier Than You                                     v       San Dimas High School

The games will hopefully be played on w/e 3 November, providing Fred and MC have sorted themselves out, and will be the only fixtures that weekend. To reiterate; there will be no Fantasy League league games on w/e 3 November, just the above Cup fixtures.

GIRLY SO GROOVY, I WANT YOU TO KNOW

In the League this weekend, Kylie Bumcheeks earn the Performance of the Week after ending league leaders Aardvark Abacus’ unbeaten run with an impressive 3-2 win at the previously impregnable Rosebury Bowl (Ady’s name for it, not mine!). Goals from Ravanelli, Hyypia and Jermaine Wright seal the victory and topple Ady’s title favourites from the summit, and trouser £100,000 for Rich Smith in the process. Well done Rich.

The new leaders, and the only team still unbeaten this season, are therefore Champions Trusted By Millions, who win 4-3 against battling Elland Road Big Boys with substitute Jason Euell amongst the goals for Beef’s lot, the Big Boys’ Robbie Fowler scoring a hat-trick to no avail. San Dimas go third with their impressive 6-1 league win over Nil Satis, and Claymore stay in the hunt, despite drawing 2-2 with Fred West.

In the inaugural Gooch Street Derby, Boston Rock return to winning ways with a 3-0 win over Prettier Than You, captain Rio Ferdinand and David Dunn (2) getting the goals for the Sky Heroes. And the Groove Machine benefit from their manager’s return from sunnier climes, a 3-1 win over basement boys Viola’s Pier being their first win since week 3! Viola’s are still yet to notch a win, despite goalie Peter Schmeichel careering upfront and scoring a fine goal in the closing stages of this one.

Elsewhere, Real Muppets are rapidly becoming the best WSFFL treble chance tips, with their 4th draw this season, 2-2 against Mega Buck Bandits. York’s Returning Glory are also worth an “X” on the coupon, their 2-2 draw with Short Straw Rovers coming courtesy of late strikes from Summer buy Tomasz Radzinski and Danny Mills. If you recall, Yorks and Muppets met on the opening day of this season. The result? A 0-0 draw. Perhaps we should have seen that as an omen…

Finally, this weekend’s results were notable for having the lowest number of clean sheets cancelled off in my tenure as co-ordinator, and possibly ever – just one, in the Aardvark/ Kylie game. A new record?

TRANSFER NEWS

French defenders seem to be the current fashion…

Player                         From                                       To                                           Fee

Franck Queudrue        Middlesbrough                        San Dimas High School          £500,000
David Noble                Arsenal                                    Trusted By Millions                £500,000
Gerry Taggart           Trusted By Millions                Pool                                         £250,000
Luciano Zavagno        Troyes (48 hour rule)              Mega Buck Bandits                £500,000
Kit Symons                Mega Buck Bandits                Pool                                         £250,000
Hannu Tihinen            Prettier Than You                   Released                                  £0
Steve Watson              Everton                                    Prettier Than You                   £500,000

Don’t forget that the players highlighted are subject to the pool “cooling off” period. Any managers interested in buying them can bid until 8 p.m. on Monday 29 October, after which time they go into the pool proper and are readily available. Don’t all rush at once!

Also, just as a reminder, guys; don’t forget that the current squad size rule, as clarified in Newsletter 1 this season, is that managers can only have 27 players in their squad at any time. I’ve been getting a rash of 48-hour bids from managers who already have 27 players, and they’re not letting me know whom they want to let go from their squads if they’re successful in their bid. It’s naughty, guys; you’re trying to bend the rule again, which is why we needed to get the clarification in the first place. I might have to start invalidating these bids unless managers who have 27 player squads (which is pretty much all of you these days) tell me who they’ll dump if they’re successful!

THE FF£75,000 QUESTION

As a regular viewer of Sky Soccer Saturday, I think it’s great to see George Best looking so healthy these days. So we’ll have a question about Man U’s finest;

Name 3 of the clubs with whom George Best attempted to make a footballing comeback, following his departure from Manchester United?

One entry per person as usual please, to me by close of play on Saturday 27 October.

The boy from Brazil who rocked the cradle (remember that weird goal celebration?), Bebeto (or should that be Baah-beto?) reportedly kept sheep and goats as pets.

Commiserations to MC, who made an educated but incorrect guess at Ronaldo. Apart from that, no other guesses and so no right ones. So there’s a rollover of £150,000 prize money for this week’s question!
