WE’RE MOVING, SO MOVING
Aardvark Abacus celebrate their ground move from Hillside Avenue to Rosebery Street in style, by going top of the WSFFL. In their first game at their new multi-thousand (!) pound venue, Ady’s team beat fellow challengers Claymore Athletic FC 3-0, a double salvo from Hasselbaink seeing Aardvark home and hosed. They go top on goal difference, as San Dimas lose their 100% record due to Real Muppets holding them to a 0-0 draw.
Fellow challengers The 22 Legged Groove Machine also fall away, goals from Eirik Bakke and Steve Brown giving Elland Road Big Boys their first win of the season by a surprising 2-0 scoreline. This, Deano’s first points of the season, gives our Antipodean colleague the Performance of the Week £100,000. Well done cobber.
With the Groovers losing (Rich obviously distracted by his talent spotting trip to the Dominican Republic) and Claymore also slipping up, Champs Trusted By Millions jump to third, retaining their unbeaten start with a 3-1 win over Viola’s Pier, Juan Pablo Angel and a late Andrew Cole effort amongst Beef’s haul. And a clutch of mid-table challengers gain ground; Boston Rock FC beating Short Straw thanks to a Harry Kewell brace, Mega Buck Bandits cantering to a 4-0 win over Nil Satis, Nil Satis sinking to the bottom as a result, and Kylie Bumcheeks continuing their recent impressive form with a good 2-0 win over stuttering Fred West, Fred’s expensively assembled side yet to show their true form. These 3 winners join Prettier Than You on 7 points, Rachel disappointed with a 0-0 draw against York’s Returning Glory and lamenting leaving Ronnie Johnsen out of her starting line-up.
I’M A SUBSTITUTE FOR ANOTHER GUY
This weekend’s results were quite odd, insofar as a number of substitutes were on the mark for their respective teams, some counting and some not. Young Francis Jeffers came off the bench to replace the injured Alan Smith and notched a goal for Boston Rock, and Andrew Cole’s last minute effort for Trusted came after he’d replaced previous scorer Angel in the 73rd minute. But Michael Ricketts, Niall Quinn (2), George Boateng and Jari Litmanen (the first time MC had left him out of the starting line-up this season!) all scored for their Premiership teams but not for their Fantasy teams, as they were non-counting subs.
The Big Man is the unluckiest man here, though; Rich looked set to benefit from his sub Solskjaer’s 2 goals to hold Elland Road to a 2-2 draw, but then his starting forward Gianfranco Zola came off the bench for Chelsea – in the 89th minute. D’oh!
EVERY YEAR THERE’S A LITLE LESS HERE
I’ve made the draw for the first round proper of the Paul Cartmell Memorial Trophy, there being no need to have a preliminary round this year as we’re down to 16 teams. The games are as follows;
Claymore Athletic FC vs Kylie Bumcheeks
Mega Buck Bandits vs Fred West Landscape Gardening XI
You Know Your Boston Rock FC vs Elland Road Big Boys
Real Muppets vs York’s Returning Glory
Aardvark Abacus vs Short Straw Rovers
San Dimas High School vs Nil Satis Nisi Optimum
22 Legged Groove Machine vs Prettier Than You
Trusted By Millions vs Viola’s Pier
The draw randomly pitches the top 8 teams in the league against the bottom 8, reflecting the draw process for the Football League Cup. Games will be played during w/c 9 October 2001, with gate receipts split 50/50. Aah, floodlit Fantasy fixtures, how atmospheric…

THE FF£75,000 QUESTION
Which future England goalkeeper had a spell on loan at Swindon Town in the mid 1980s?
One entry per person as usual please, to me by close of play on Saturday 30 September. I’ve decided to change the question deadline because I’m trying to get the Newsletters completed and sent out as soon as possible after the last fixture of the weekend finishes, which sometimes is before the previous deadline of close of play on Sunday.
Ian Botham used to play for Scunthorpe United, back in the early 80’s, before he got too beefy to play professional football (not that that’s ever stopped Neil Ruddock). This one was too easy by half, though, with a deluge of correct guesses. Well done to Rich Timms who was the lucky bugger first out of the hat, trousering the rollover £150,000 for the Groove Machine as a result.
Commiserations go to Ryan, MC, Peej, Clive and Beef, who also guessed correctly.
SHORTS
A busy day in the re-cats office; Aardvark Abacus’ Lauren and Ledley King are now defenders, Bo Hansen (pool) is a midfielder, York’s Returning Glory’s Jonathan Greening is a midfielder and San Dimas’ Christian Ziege is also a midfielder… the “Football365” website ran a superb lookalike recently; goalkeeping eccentric Neville Southall and rock’n’roll eccentric Captain Beefheart. The words “peas” and “pod” leapt to mind…
