2001/2002 - Newsletter 23 (3 March 2002)

I GET BY WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS

Aardvark Abacus extend their lead at the top of the table to 3 points, after a 5-1 drubbing of Short Straw Rovers. However, the fact that Ady is able to see daylight between himself and the chasing pack at the top is down to his 3 closest challengers all slipping up, beaten by his brother, his tenant, and his friendly WSFFL league co-ordinator! Yup, in a real topsy-turvy weekend, Boston Rock FC put Claymore Athletic FC to the sword in a pulsating game, winning 4-3 thanks to a late Malcolm Christie goal. Trusted By Millions were edged out 2-1 by Mega Buck Bandits, with Stubbs and Henchoz on target for Dave. And the Groove Machine overcame San Dimas High School 1-0, with a scrambled Gus Poyet goal.

Real Muppets therefore had an opportunity to consolidate in 4th spot, and they took it, beating Elland Road 1-0. Prettier Than You, despite being held 2-2 by Fred West, moved up to 5th place, England prospect Darius Vassell on target again for Rachel. Elsewhere, both bottom teams lost again; York’s by a solitary Sami Hyypia goal to Kylie Bumcheeks, and Nil Satis by 2-1 against a rejuvenated Viola’s Pier line-up, thanks to a Les Ferdinand goal and a bizarre Frank Sinclair own-goal.

And as for Performance of the Week? Well, whilst acknowledging fine performances by Mega Bucks and the Groove Machine in particular this week, I decided to give it to… myself, actually. So, for knocking 4 past the usually-impregnable Claymore defence, You Know Your Boston Rock FC wins this week’s £100,000.

Oh, and Manager of the Month for February was a tie, between the 2 teams with 100% records in that month. Step forward, Aardvark Abacus and Prettier Than You; Ady and Rachel are both better off to the tune of £250,000. Well done guys.

THE FF£100,000 QUESTION

One for the older managers amongst us, perhaps…

Tommy Docherty’s famous retort of “No. Mr. Chairman, I want you in front of me, where I can see what you’re doing” (when his Chairman told him “I’m right behind you”), was said to which Chairman?

One entry per person as usual please, to me by close of play on Saturday 9 March 2002.

The smallest football league in the world is in appropriately named Scilly Isles where Woolpack Wanderers and Garrison Gunners play each other 20 times a season on the only pitch on St Mary’s - the largest of the Islands. So far Garrison Gunners have won 21 titles and Woolpack 17. Barking mad!

Correct guesses from Rachel and Dean, and the Elland Road Big Boy was the first out of the hat, so the £100,000 goes “down under”. Well done Dean. Wrong guesses from , well, me, (I went for Guernsey, but there are a massive 7 teams there!), Ady (Isle of Aaron), Rich Timms (San Marino) and Clive (Andorra). Good question, though…

SHORTS

Recats; Trusted’s Gareth Barry is a midfielder, and Matthew Piper (pool) is a forward…
