2001/2002 - Newsletter 22 (23 February 2002)

I CAN GIVE ORDERS TO GUYS MUCH BIGGER THAN MY OLDER BROTHER

It’s “plus ca change” in the Bevan Derby stakes, after the International break, with Ady’s Aardvark Abacus still currently leading the way over his brother Dave’s Mega Buck Bandits. This weekend, in front of a bumper crowd at the Rosebery Bowl, Ady beat Dave 2-0 thanks to goals from Anelka and Harte, the victory being that much sweeter as it lifted Ady to the top of the table.

Joining Ady on 43 points, but with an inferior goal difference by 10, is Claymore Athletic FC, whose French strike force of Henry and Marlet were on target in their 3-2 “Toffees Derby” win over Nil Satis. Former table-toppers Trusted slip to 3rd, as they could only draw 1-1 with 10-man Short Straw Rovers. And San Dimas slip even further, down to 5th spot, after a real spanking by Fred West, this most unpredictable of sides having a good day beating the High School 4-2 and winning this week’s POTW £100,000 into the bargain. Well done Fred.

Good days also for Title outsiders Real Muppets and Prettier Than You; Muppets beat in-form Kylie Bumcheeks 2-0 with a Dabizas double to go 4th, and Rachel beat the Groove Machine thanks to an Aaron Hughes effort, to go level on points with San Dimas, only 6 points off that top slot.

Elsewhere, Boston Rock and Violas fought out a dour 0-0 draw, with defences well on top in this game. And a Tomas Radzinski goal wasn’t enough for bottom club York’s, as Elland Road beat them 2-1 to keep Julian rooted to bottom slot.

THE FF£100,000 QUESTION

Here’s a newsletter question submitted by Dave and Ceri, the managerial team of Mega Buck Bandits, so direct your guesses to them this week!

Where is the smallest football league in the world, and how many teams are in it?

One entry per person as usual please by close of play on Saturday 2 March 2002. And I’m going to have a go at this one!

Colin Todd quit as manager of Bolton Wanderers in protest at the sale of Per Frandsen to Blackburn Rovers. Bolton fans must now be smiling a wry smile as, not only have they gotten rid of Todd and now have the infinitely preferable Sam Allardyce as boss, but they also have Frandsen back, after his Blackburn move flopped! Even if they are still going down.

I only got one guess, and it was correct. So well done Ryan, the cash goes to Real Muppets this week.

SHORTS

Short Straw’s Scott Minto is now a defender, and Aardvark Abacus’ John Arne Riise is (some might say, “at last!”) a midfielder…
