2000/2001 - Newsletter 9 (20 November 2000)

HERE IN MY POCKET I’VE GOT THE STORY OF THE BLUES

The Evertonian derby between Clive and Paul finished in a 2-1 win for Claymore Athletic, who go marching into a 4 point lead at the top of the table as a result. Kevin Campbell and David Weir, rather fittingly, settled the derby game in Clive’s favour. Once again results went the way of our jammy league co-ordinator, as Willy Shakey suffered a surprising home defeat at the hands of Woodchester Rovers, their resurgent striker James Beattie notching 2 more decisive goals. And Mega Buck Bandits were held to a 1-1 draw by MC’s former lodger Dean and his Big Boys. There’s gratitude for you, eh MC?

The wheels came firmly off the Trusted By Millions revival bandwagon at the weekend, with a 4-2 beating at the hands of Viola’s Pier, which earned Steve Paul the TOTW hundred grand, so congrats to Steve. Sneaking into contention at the top come Real Muppets, whose 2-1 victory at York’s Returning Glory moves them into third slot. And finally (!!!) Boston Rock return to winning ways with a 2-0 win at Short Straw Rovers, moving them into a handy 7th place.

At the bottom, Donkey Derby pick up a useful win at the expense of inconsistent Aardvark Abacus, whilst Pacer’s Pacesetters lose again, this time to Prettier Than You, thanks to a late Gary Naysmith goal.

UNTIL I LEARN TO ACCEPT MY REWARD

In the League Cup Preliminary Round, a crushing 6-0 defeat of Prettier Than You ensures a safe passage into the First Round for TOTW winners Viola’s Pier. In the other tie, Nil Satis gain some consolation from the weekend’s derby defeat, by beating York’s Returning Glory 2-1.

So Viola’s and Nil Satis join the “big guns” in the First Round proper, which will be played this coming weekend (w/e 25 November) and will again double up with the usual league fixtures. Clive hasn’t yet done the draw, but I am advised that he will do so in the next day or so, and will get an e-mail out confirming the draw. And he will also, presumably, phone our Amish lorry driver colleague and let him know who he’s playing!

TRANSFER NEWS

Not a lot to report this week, but here you go…

Player                         From                                       To                                           Fee

Shaun Newton            Prettier Than You                   Charlton Athletic                     £250,000
Amir Karic                  22 Legged Groove Machine   Ipswich Town                         £250,000
Stephen Caldwell        Newcastle United                    22 Legged Groove Machine   £500,000

I understand that this means that new Derby loan signing (and one of the most recognisable figures in world football at the moment) Taribo West is in the pool. Any takers, anyone?

THE FF£75,000 QUESTION

Okay, here’s this week’s brain basher;

The BBC TV series “Playing The Field” was inspired by a book written about which football team?

One entry per person as usual please, to me on phone number 01793 495101 (home) or e-mail Swindonsheriff@aol.com, by close of play on Monday 27th November.

The young Ryan Giggs played for England Schoolboys, for whom he qualified due to his mother’s nationality, using his dad’s surname of Wilson, before eschewing both name and country, in exchange for the Land Of His Fathers and the Name Of His Mother. There’s one confused kid for you.

Congratulations to Paul Saleh, who was the one and only correct guess this week. Nil Satis Nisi Optimum is therefore FF£150,000 richer as a result.

SHORTS

I’ve been recently referring to new Prettier Than You signing Gary Naysmith as Graeme Naysmith without knowing why, until I remembered that Graeme Naysmith was the bass player of late 80’s shoegazing band The Pale Saints. Exactly how anally retentive am I?…
