YOU’D LIKE TO THINK THAT YOU WERE INVINCIBLE, YEAH, WELL WEREN’T WE ALL ONCE
Well, flippant remarks about a “near death experience” in the last newsletter really came back to haunt me, didn’t they? A recurrence of my pancreatitis left me under the knife and really, truly, at death’s door. That I made it back is a testament to the skill of the docs and nurses, my support network (Rachel especially, but also thanks to Dave and Ady throughout this time), and my own determination to get back and get the Fantasy League running again!
SIMPLE STUFF
I’m too tired to write up all the fixtures from all the weeks we’ve missed since the last newsletter, I’m sure you’ll understand. So I’m going to keep it simple and write a brief summary of the games.
In the league, the top 3 are only separated by 7 points, with Kylie Bumcheeks still leading the way. Their lead is now only 4 over Boston Rock, as the “Sky Heroes” inflicted only their second league defeat of the season in week 18. The Abacus sit 3 points further back, their winning run punctuated by losses against Real Muppets (week 16) and Boston Rock (week 14).
Up to 4th, after a 6 match unbeaten run, comes Claymore Athletic, who are 7 points off 3rd place. Prettier Than You are 5th, after their impressive recent run included a draw with Kylie and a win over Boston Rock (weeks 16 and 17).
Going in the wrong way are Trusted, who slipped from 4th to 7th but are again improving, and the Groove Machine, who plunged from 7th to 13th position with 5 defeats in 6 games. Right at rock bottom, San Dimas’ good recent form saw them pull away from the danger zone, and Viola’s Pier are therefore beached at the bottom, 9 points adrift of the rest.
In the Cup, we’re already down to the last 4, who are Claymore Athletic FC, Aardvark Abacus, Fred West Landscape Gardening XI and Trusted By Millions. Kylie Bumcheeks beat Boston Rock in the tie of the first round, but Trusted put in a POTW performance to knock out Kylie 3-0 in the quarter finals last weekend.
That’s your summary – all the results and a PCMT Final report are in this newsletter in sequential order. Enjoy!

THE FF£100,000 QUESTION
Which reknowned Italian International recently took a 90% pay cut in order to help his club out of their current financial situation?
One guess per person to me via (01793) 527783 or swindonsheriff@aol.com, by close of play on Saturday 1 February 2003.
Newcastle United, England U-21 and Prettier Than You striker Shola Ameobi’s full first name Foluwashola is Nigerian for “Glory to God”. Despite the exotic name and being born in Nigeria, he was brought up within a stone’s throw of St. James Park and as such considers himself a true Geordie. Well, why aye, man Shola!
Correct answers from Rachel (who should know). Wrong ‘uns from Clive (Joseph-Desire Job) andDave Bevan (Nwankwo Kanu!). So the rollover £200,000 goes to Prettier Than You.
SHORTS
· Apologies to York’s Returning Glory – in the last Newsletter’s League Table, I credited them with 2 more draws (and points) than they actually have. Don’t really know what happened there, but it’s correct now. Sorry Julian!…
· Loads of recats; Boston Rock’s Harry Kewell and Jo Tessem (Pool) are now forwards; 22LGM’s Sun Jihai and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, PTY’s Gary Naysmith, and Trusted’s Jason Euell are now midfielders; and Claymore’s Olivier Bernard and David Unsworth are now defenders…
· One recat which falls under the recat “cooling down” rule; Southampton’s Paul Telfer, currently in the pool, is now a defender. Any bids for him can be made until 8 p.m. on Monday 3 February, otherwise he’s up for grabs…

Congratulations to Kylie Bumcheeks, who won the 2002 Paul Cartmell Memorial Trophy Final, thus retaining the trophy for the second successive year. Rich Smith’s team did it the hard way, though, by beating a tough and resilient Aardvark Abacus side in a tense and thrilling final.
The first half was the tense affair, with both sides adopting a cagey approach to their opponents. Carl Cort was substituted early on after a recurrence of his knee injury, and his sub Nicolas Anelka came closest in the first half, firing just wide after good flank work from Solano.
Kylie burst into life as an attacking force in the second half, however, after obviously getting a rocket from manager Rich Smith at half time. After sustained pressure, Shearer finally broke the deadlock on 58 minutes, with a trademark header from a Griffin cross. The other half of the league’s hottest strike force, James Beattie, extended the lead on 73 with a sweet volley. This brought Aardvark back to life, and they set up a grandstand finish when Anelka netted with a cool finish, with 6 minutes left on the clock. However, Steve Howey headed home in the last minute to ensure the cup went to Kylie!
