2002/2003 - Newsletter 11 (24 November 2002)

WILL WE ALWAYS BE SO HIGH

Kylie Bumcheeks continue their winning ways this weekend with a 3-1 win over Claymore Athletic, and in so doing they stretch their lead at the top of the table to 5 points. A brace from James Beattie and the Shearer “double hundred” goal won them the game. They now have new immediate pursuers in the shape of champions Aardvark Abacus, who disposed of basement boys Viola’s Pier with a 3-0 win, debutant Henrik Pedersen amongst the goals for the Abacus. They rise above Boston Rock FC by goal difference only, after the Sky Heroes were held to a 1-1 draw by a stubborn Yorks Returning Glory. Trusted keep pace in 4th after a 2-1 win over Elland Road Big Boys. These 4 teams are 6 points clear of the rest, and with just over a third of the season gone it’s already difficult to see this year’s eventual Champions being anyone else, other than one of these 4.

Elland drop to 7th following their defeat by Trusted, as Nil Satis beat Fred 4-3 to go 5th  and also win the POTW £100,000. Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s hat-trick for Fred proved not enough to beat this season’s clean sheet specialists, so well done again Everton, I mean Paul. Prettier Than You make it 3 wins out of 3, rising to a season-high of 6th in the process, as Rachel’s young forwards Bellamy and Vassell finally come good in a 3-0 win over Short Straw. And there were finally good wins for Mega Buck Bandits – a crushing 4-1 defeat of stuttering Real Muppets – and also the Groove Machine, who beat fellow underachievers San Dimas 3-1.

AND SO THE STORY ENDED, DO YOU KNOW IT ALL SO WELL

Kylie Bumcheeks completed a good week by beating San Dimas 3-1 in the Paul Cartmell Memorial Trophy Quarter Final Second Replay (bit of a mouthful, that!), so I was finally able to make the semi-final draw, which is as follows:

Fred West Landscape Gardening XI        v       Aardvark Abacus
Trusted By Millions                                  v       Kylie Bumcheeks

These games will be played this coming weekend, W/E 30 November 2002, doubling up with the league fixtures. Rachel, who made the draw, reckons it’s going to be a Kylie-Aardvark final, so it’s up to Fred and Beef to prove her wrong!

THE FF£100,000 QUESTION

This one’s been hanging around for awhile. I’d best use it sometime…

Which Football League team played in Union Jack shirts back in the 1890’s?

One guess per person to me by close of play on Saturday 30 November 2002.

Gazza nearly joined DC United, but their season was drawing to a close and both parties agreed it wasn’t worthwhile to push the deal through for 8 or so games. It had nothing to do with his girth or lack of fitness whatsoever. No sir.

Correct answers provided by Peej and Clive, and the money goes this week to the persistent Mr. Fenwick. Well done Clive.

SHORTS

·      Couple of recats; Kylie Bumcheeks Goran Bunjevcevic joins his million or so defenders, following recat from midfield, and Youri Djorkaeff joins Trusted’s million or so forwards, again following recat from midfield!
·      And did my ears decieve me, as I watched Sky Soccer Saturday last weekend, or was the tannoy at the Hawthorns playing the Ramones’ seminal punk classic “Blitzkrieg Bop” as the Baggies and Birmingham City trooped off at half-time? Although judging by the 0-0 final score in this game, both teams could have done with a frontman of the calibre of the late great Joey Ramone...
